We didn't do an excursion here either but we had a blast. The weather was also amazing here. The shopping was about the same as Cozumel, cheap souvenirs or expensive jewelry, so we didn't spend much time on that. We saw a sign for the public bus system which was $2.50 per ride, much cheaper than a taxi would be and the drivers and locals were pretty helpful letting us know where we needed to be to catch the bus (van actually). We went to Turtle Farm which was really cool. We got to see the adults as well as the babies, and even pick up some of the turtles for photo ops. The tour there was very informative without dragging on for long. We went to seven mile beach after that which was beautiful! The water was crystal clear and there was real sand, unlike in Cozumel.
The beach at cozumel wasn't that great, the sand was just ground sea shells and there were a lot of rocks in the water that made swimming difficult. Also the shopping was either junk souvenirs or expensive jewelry, nothing in between. Maybe we would have enjoyed one of the excursions there better than going out on our own but who knows. At least the weather was gorgeous.
