Disney Magic

4 Night Western Caribbean (Galveston Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 26, 2024

Ship: Disney Magic

Cabin number: GTY

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Review summary

Our party of seven had its moments of pleasurable experiences, but we found the overall experience not worth the hype. Little kids enjoy seeing characters but their attention span to wait in line for hours just for a photo op is too much. Bigger kids would have more fun either at the Disney Parks or on a Carnival cruise - just saying.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Getting on the ship was fine

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Nothing to brag about - similar cuisine as on other ships we've been on

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Primary activity was for folks to wait in line hours on end for Disney character photos. Characters did not roam the ship as they do at the Parks.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Theater productions were great, the variety of movies on the outside deck was spot on.

Children's Programs

2 out of 5
Too small and not much more than a room with coloring books. We had a 4 year old, 10 year old and 11 year old so we experienced three areas - all about the same.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
We've always heard that once you go on a Disney cruise, you'll never want to go on a competitor's cruise - this was absolutely false! Although the staff was pleasant and mostly attentive, the experience was not "better" than any other cruise we've experienced.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Nothing extraordinary. Be cautious of the elevators - my father's arm was cut in two places when the door closed on him (elevators are also very small). Sadly, not a single Disney staff member followed up on his condition (he is 76). All that was said was "we'll get engineering to check it out".

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Typical interior cabin size, it served its purpose and we had no complaints. Our room attendant was great and he kept everything very tidy and fresh!

Ship tip

Don't do it! The Disney experience is meant for the Parks. If you want to experience a cruise, especially with kids, go Carnival.

Ports of call

Galveston, Texas

4 out of 5
We didn't do anything in Galveston since we are from the area, however the convenience of a cruise port within an hour from home is very nice.

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

2 out of 5
Didn't get to visit this port due to closure. We were told it was inclement weather, but we highly suspect there's more to the reasoning especially with it being Mexico.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
What a joke! Instead of disembarking by assigned color system, they announced what was presumed to be the top three Disney Vacation Club levels and then it was a free-for-all. Very unorganized and chaotic!
