Prinsendam

August 2014 - Prinsendam to Europe - Northern Europe

We had to go back

We had done a week in Northern Europe just the year before, but had been suffering from horrible jetlag and were not able to fully enjoy the itinerary.  We elected to do the 2 week itinerary as it allowed us to visit some similar ports and add new ones with the additional week.  While we enjoyed the intimacy of the Prinsendam, I have to say that I believe we would have enjoyed one of the larger ships more.  Having said that it was certainly delightful to connect with so many of our fellow cruisers who were on the ship, as the Prinsendam is definitely a smaller ship.  One of the reasons I enjoy the HAL cruise ships is the mid ship pool always has a cover that permits pool usage even in bad weather.  That is not the case on  the Prinsendam, the midship pool is open to the elements and in Northern Europe weather can be a little cooler.  The dining room as always was great and we commented to our travel agent that we had one of the most wonderful table mates we had ever encountered on a cruise.  The stateroom was a good size, we were happy with the space and the walk in closet contributed to making the cabin seem uncluttered.  The staff as always were a delight and friendly.  The 3 shows we attended were absolutely entertaining, including an afternoon interview with the captain who was terrifically funny. I always make use of the gym and spa and although they are smaller on this  ship I was never not able to access the facilities.

Rotterdam

September 2013 - Rotterdam to Europe - Northern Europe

"Took a break from cruising for a while and this was our first cruise in approximately 10 years. I had insisted on Holland America after trying other cruise lines before and am happy we returned to HAL"

August 2013 - Rotterdam to Europe - Northern Europe

norway was on our bucket list of cruises

This was our first cruise back after a 10 year hiatus.  We had previously cruised on the Westerdam a number of years ago as well as 2 cruises with Carnival and 3 with Royal Caribbean.  Having said that I was determined that we get back to cruising with HAL and we had always wanted to try a Northern European itinerary so.... Let me say that it was definitely worth it, this itinerary was a definite highlight for our return to cruising.  The service was attentive but unobtrusive, something I deem important being employed in the service industry.  The itinerary was perfect allotting the ideal amount of sea days and port days.  The weather was remarkable and according to the crew much warmer than we could have hoped for and as it was the end of the season for this itinerary the ports were not crowded with other ships.  The food was wonderful in both the main dining room and the Pinnacle Grill.  Our stateroom (a balcony) was a good size, large enough that we felt it would remain feeling spacious if we were on a longer cruise.  The entertainment was fine, but we don't tend to partake of the shows, preferring the smaller lounges.

sueb84's Tips

Honningsvag, Norway - If you are planning on going to the North Cape be prepared for large crowds. I think everyone on the ship did that excursion.
Leknes, Norway - were not able to do this stop as weather had forced a change of itinerary early in the cruise.
Bergen, Norway - If you're planning on doing the funicular plan for large crowds
Geiranger, Norway - Just a beautiful scenic port. we chose to walk around as we had been here before.
Prinsendam Prinsendam - This is HAL's most popular ship, due to it's smaller more intimate spaces. A lot of the people on the ship have cruised on the Prinsendam in the past. The ship is a little tired looking but the spaces are still enjoyable.
Rotterdam, Netherlands - we stayed at the hotel New York. Great service. great room, and the true benefit was the fact that after checking out you just walk over to the pier and onto the ship
Rotterdam Rotterdam - We were originally concerned about our stateroom as it was right next to the elevators, however either the room was well soundproofed or the other cruisers were extremely considerate as we were never bothered by the elevators at all.
