Carnival Fascination

March 2013 - Carnival Fascination to Caribbean - Bahamas

Spring Break? For whom?

Carnival please listen up! If you are going to accept single 18-22 year olds on college spring break, please have ships designated just for them. The partying and obnoxiousness was not appealing to the average adult/family crowd. I would estimate our ship had probably 50-75% college aged kids. They also hogged the desirable "adults only" quieter outdoor lounge areas. It was VERY difficult to get a deck chair for one person (anywhere), and forget about getting 2 chairs together. There was one point where it nearly came to blows over 2 deck chairs, security was called and a half hour mediation ensued. Unpleasant for all surrounding folks, and could be avoided if there were: A. more deck chairs and B. less 20 year olds sitting by the pool all day long drinking, or just leaving their towels on the chairs and never coming back. The adults only "Serenity" area was hopelessly full all the time, mostly with the college aged group of course. Couldn't they stay in the main pool area with the rest of their crowd? Same with all the hot tubs. They were always full of the drunk 20 year olds. Annoying and avoidable with better management of this issue. On the positive side, the housekeeping staff was excellent, called us by name and did a great job with the service. Our dining staff varied, and most were very good. Sometimes services was pretty slow though, and one waiter was impatient and almost rude. Dining room food was very tasty, and beautifully presented. However be aware--portions are much smaller than normal restaurants. We often ordered more than one portion of things to compensate, all at no extra charge of course. The variety could be better, a usual night time menu had about 8 entree choices that changed daily. There was also a portion that was the same daily, with about 6-8 typical American restaurant choices. We both gained about 10 lbs, so much for the diet! Obviously we found enough to eat and we did enjoy having interesting choices and having someone cook and clean up for us. Ahh! We did 2 shore excursions. One was in Nassau, time with dolphins. Way overpriced, but a fun memory. It was held at the Atlantis resort which was AMAZING--a place to go back and easily spend a week and never run out of things to do. Very fun waterpark and beautiful beaches and pool areas. The other shore excursion was in Freeport, and was snorkeling. Again, overpriced as shore excursions usually are, but it was very fun. The reef was so-so but there were tons of cool fish to see, a huge variety. Overall, we like cruising because of the all inclusive features, but have vowed NOT to go in March with the spring breakers. The service with Carnival was great overall, and I would recommend Carnival, especially if they separated the college aged crowd from the rest of the cruising crowd.
