Will not cruise on Holland America again

Sail Date: August 01, 2009

Traveled As: Family (young children)

Room Type: Inside

Checking in at the port in Seattle was less than satisfactory, my husband dropped myself and our baby off with the luggage and went to drop off the car. I waited for over 45 minutes for a luggage handler to come check in our luggage. We were passed several times by Princess luggage handlers because they employ twice as many luggage handlers. Once the luggage was checked, the actual check in was very smooth. When we got on the ship and into our stateroom they had not set up the babys crib we did not bring our own because we were told that Holland America provided good ones and one would be set up for us. We went down to the front desk to ask for one to be sent up right away because the baby wanted to take a nap, two hours later a broken pack-n-play was handed to us. As we set it up ourself we found that it was broken. When we asked the steward for a new one he told us there was nothing wrong with the first one (it collapsed in on itself when our baby stood up in it). We went to the front desk to ask for a new one, waited another hour and was finally sent a new one to assemble ourselves. We thought that was the end of it until a day after our cruise was over we noticed that our baby had bites appearing all over her body. We took her to the pediatrician who said she had bed bug bites.

Pros: The food in the main dining room was outstanding

Cons: Bed bugs in baby crib, poor buffet slecetion, poor information about ports

Recommends Westerdam? No.

Service and Staff
Our room steward was rude but the rest of the staff were very helpful.
Ship Quality
Food and Dining
Main dining room was excellent, buffet selection was less than satisfactory and closed at strange times so it was difficult to find food for a late lunch or an late evening snack.
Cabin / Stateroom
The stateroom was ok but the baby crib was terrible!
