After reading some of the... by sisuperplumb

Ship: Veendam

After reading some of the reviews we were a little bit apprehensive about our first HAL cruise but It was absolutely fantastic, amazing, we couldn’t fault it. We did have small issue with the toilet not flushing properly but that was soon rectified. Cabin staff Naryo & Qatar were great, kept the cabin very clean & fresh throughout our 15 day cruise, all the staff were very friendly always with a smile. 😊 Food in all areas was great with a lot of choice for everyone, even the fussy eaters I’d imagine. Ate in the Pinnacle Grill one night at a cost of $35 per person. The food & service were excellent. The size of the ship was just right for us.

Great way to escape the summer heat of the south! by rschweer

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

If you want to escape the heat of summer, this was a great way to do so. Aside from the fun of the cruise itself, the ports are lovely. This and Alaska are your best bets without flying across an ocean.

Thoroughly enjoyable two week cruise by maurathomas

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

We loved all aspects of this vacation. Going into it we were a bit nervous, having read the reviews other people posted. They were right in the ship being dated and the crowd being 65+, however neither of those things truly detracted from the experience. The food was delicious, the service was the best we’ve ever experienced, and the rooms were clean and well maintained despite being outdated. All the ports were beautiful and easily explored, the cities were gorgeous, and all excursions we took part in were well run and knowledgeable of the area. Duncan Tours on PE was a must- do; he was the best excursion on the whole trip and made us feel welcomed and a part of the community. We will definitely be interested in sailing with Holland America again, and would love to cruise Canada agai in the future.

Fourteen Nights in New England & Canada = A Little Bit of Heaven, thanks to Holland America's Veendam. by shblair

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

We felt pampered from the beginning to the end of our cruise. Positives were: plenty of luggage storage and closet space in stateroom; in-shower decanters were a nice touch; great selection of evening movies; stateroom excellently maintained by staff who were very friendly and eager to please; great Cruise Director!Negatives were: lack of adequate power outlets in the stateroom; poor quality reception of stateroom television; confusing interior design of the ship; temperature too cold in the theater room; and lack of separate, quiet room for reading.

Horrible!!! Don not use Holland America! by ijspap

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Cuba

Be VERY leary. DO NOT GO. I have the CDC Vessel Sanitazion Program (CDC) on this one. Disgusting, filthy toilets and “sanitation”. I walked into my cabin when it was announced that cabins were clean and ready, and I went into my bathroom and the toilet was over flooded with filthy water and human fecal matter! The public bathrooms were almost always filthy; I never saw anyone clean a public toilet all the days. The HVAC (heating and cooling) was constantly not working.....everyone complaining....even “Guest Relations” told me to be glad my room wasn’t almost 80 degrees like others and that I had SOME air. I couldn’t believe that! When the air was on, there was an exhaust smelll (others complaining as well)and a strong odor that I have never smelled but it smelled like rotting fruit. Several times thru out the cruise, toilets backed up, and there was no running water....one day I had no hot water for 20 hours and guest relations did nothing and I finally approached a navigation officer, who handled it. Communication was almost non existent between Departments was very poor...., for example, it was in their daily program that card players meet in a certain room each a.m., and the room was not set up 1/2 the time, and passengers were getting and setting up tables and chairs. We were promised water and coffee in that room, and only received one day, even after repeated calls. Customer Service was so poor it was almost comical.....but it wasn’t, but I could see why. I was so upset and frustrated one night when I had to WALK TO GUEST RELATIONS IN MY PJs, as no one would answer the phone, and I was crying and the Hotel Director was by my elevator and I implored him for help and he actually said “Not my job” and left we standing there! Employee relations was very inconsistent; some crew (like my cabin attendant in 598) actually walked away while I was talking! The Ship is very very run down, stains, boards missing or damaged under floors, for example I reported repeatedly that on the floor adjacent to Table 63, main dining, had some serious problems with the floor, as everytime a wait staff would walk by, the floor would sink in and bother my back. I was told they could do nothing until next dry dock!! Although the food was quite good, I did have a health issue. I have serious celiac disease and must be gluetin free, and in the buffet, the room service, and only once in main dining....they tried to serve me food with gluten. I stopped using room service as almost daily, it was not on time, missing items, coffee cold, etc. The promenade deck had hard wooden loungers with slats and NO COVERS....unusable! Photo below. I had to RENT a refrigerator for my medicines and special diet food and it was delivered in filthy condition! When I arrived in my cabin, it was not properly cleaned....hair everywhere, sticky remote control, dirty clothes in the drawers, badly stained and ripped sheets! The bathroom floors had the same shoe stain for two days. The charges for HALs excursions were 50% to 1400% (YES! 1400%] higher than one could find outside. The 4th of July party and BarBQue promised on their private island was not done because “thunderstorms were predicted”.....we checked the weather on line and we saw no such prediction and it was a beautiful day. The furniture in the showroom was uncomfortable and the onboard singers and dancers and their shows were so bad....people were calling it “dancing by numbers”. The outside entertainers were just okay, not bad. Often, it would take so long for someone at the front desk to answer phone, I waited up to an hour and walked down in my PJs.

Good Job, Veendam! by fndannen

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Cuba

Veendam dining staff and crew were wonderful. Food is excellent. We like the smaller ships (1200 passengers on Veendam) and our room opening on to Promenade deck. The ship shows signs of constant use, but maintenance is there to resolve issues. Last refreshed in 2009.

Outstanding Cuban Adventure out of Boston! by ELF81012

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)

The 14 day Cuban cruise was amazing!!!!! Dewa, Eka and Mikey made dining super fun. I highly recommend being seated in their section. Dave N. is also really great in the dining room. Afternoon tea was always fun on sea days. Heru is an excellent room steward. He works so quickly and is super efficient. Bingo with Hanna was a blast. Jorge is also entertaining.

Not A Great Ship by DiviAruba

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Bermuda

Food running out at buffets Running out of alcohol (Heineken for one) Lack of knowing how many drinks we had throughout the day with the drink plan - had to go to desk to find out Poor quality food Lack of food after 8:00 at the buffet Pizza closing at 8 pm. Pizza was bad, but it was better than nothing. Dive-In closing at 5 p.m. Lack of staff to wait on people by the pool Lack of staff to pick up dirty tables and re-set Boat is old and shows it. The ship set-up is odd, have to walk through buffet to get to the pool.

Not the best by zap823

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Bermuda

Ship is very dated. AC did not work well. Not much entertainment. Bars were closed by 9:00 every night. Nothing going on on the pool deck. Food was phenomenal and service was awesome. We usually cruise NCL so we are used to everything being open at night and having entertainment on the pool deck. This ship is definitely lacking. Being in Hamilton for three full days was awesome!!

Best cruise ever! by arldicmcki

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Bermuda

I am sad that this is the end of an era! Holland America will no longer cruise to Bermuda. Very sad! This was the best itinerary for Betmuda. Docking in Hamilton is awesome! Now the only thing left is mega ships at the Dockyard! Time to stay home!

First time cruise by loish173873900

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

This was my first cruise and it exceeded my expectations. The service was excellent and genuine. The staff was very hard working and accommodating. The food was so delicious and wide variety as well. The chefs really put a lot of effort into it. From breakfast to dinner, there was a wide range to choose from. I felt like I was fine dining every night. There were also hand sanitizers available at every dining entrance. The staff were continuously wiping down the handrails of the ship and frequently cleaning our stateroom (usually twice daily). Entertainment, gym access and library were wonderful for us as well. I had no complaints at all. I plan to travel with Holland America in the future.

Bermuda cruise port is the... by mikefaris

Sail date: /
Ship: Veendam

Bermuda cruise port is the best part. The cabin room balcony deck 9 room 128 and 152 stat away do not go on the ship. Blankets like sobellux blankets king and queen and twin wonder blankets not washed between guests and have stains and holes in the linens. The staff likes to reuse food and keep it to it spoils. You get food poisoning on this cruise. All people in my party got food poisoning. A dog like to per every where nice in the good area. Cool Last, Holland American cruise ship management and guest services use wood spaces in the ceiling to stop the noise cabin rooms at sea. Please customers and invester demand some money back.

Need A New Ship! by ted59063346

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Veendam / Destination: Bermuda

This ship was (was!) once great but age has taken its toll, and when combined with poor staff in the dining room, even the great cabin steward we had (Ali) could not save this cruise. We did take Veendam knowing it was older, but we liked that it docks right on Front Street in Downtown Hamilton, unlike most ships which because of their size must use the very out-of-the-way Naval Dockyard. That said, the ship is of an old design (built we were told in 1986) so there are some badly out-dated things (despite several updates) which become obvious: There is a huge step up from the cabin to the bathroom (no fun at 4 a.m.); we ended up with a bathtub, not a shower, which was cumbersome to get in and out of, and as very veteran cruisers we felt like things were just not good and did not work. The elevators were so poor (often 2 of 4 at a bank out of order) that most of us gave up and walked the stairs. Even the captain, during his "ask the captain" session admitted they are THE top complaint on his ship and HE hates them. That says a LOT!!! The staff of the rooms and front desk were super and the food in the Lido was good. I rarely eat in a Lindo, preferring the dining room, but staff in the Veendam dining room was so spotty and even uncaring that it was not pleasant. We only did dinners there every night as our table mates (we always get a large table on late seating) were wonderful, fun and will remain life-long friends. The food was at best so-so; items ordered did not always appear and despite apologizing repeatedly especially after I went to the purser's office and griped, the bosses in the dining room seemed unable to corral their staff into doing a good job! Finally, and this is a symptom of modern obese times, between the elevators being on the fritz so much AND the ship having so many folks in electric wheelchairs trying to get anywhere ranged from difficult to impossible, which did make the cruise less-than-pleasant.
