Review summary

We have taken this cruise 3 times and it never disappoints. We were leaving Boston behind the Dorian Hurricane and the captain waited to depart several hours in order to avoid any high winds and seas. The cruise was flawless and has a great itinerary. We will likely take this cruise again and leave in early October to hit the peak fall color season.

Embarkation was fast and efficient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Food was very good at all venues.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Holland America's activities are typically geared to an older generation (which suits me just fine).

3 out of 5
Ship's main stage show is just OK, but not the main reason to go on this cruise.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service was outstanding from all groups - waiters, room stewards and other ship personnel. All very professional and friendly.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The Veendam is beginning to show its age, but still a great mid-size ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin was comfortable, with plenty of storage for clothing.

Ship tip

The Veendam is very popular on this cruise in September and October due to the fall season in New England and Canada.

Ports of call

Boston, Massachusetts

5 out of 5
Boston is a great city to visit, with plenty to see and do. Very walkable city.

Bar Harbor, Maine

5 out of 5
A trip to Acadia National Park is always wonderful, especially on a clear day. We could see mountains 93 miles away from the top of the mountain. Spectacular views of the Maine coast.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

5 out of 5
The Iconic Towns of Halifax tour visits Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, and Majone Bay. Wonderful excursion with time to walk these very scenic towns.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

5 out of 5
Sydney offers a wonderful and interesting sailing excursion on Bras d'Or Lake where you can sail past the home of Alexander Graham Bell.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

5 out of 5
Charlottetown is a lovely area and worth seeing on a driving tour. Even with the rain the scenery was beautiful and lush.

Cruise Gulf Of St. Lawrence

5 out of 5
Cruising the gulf of the St. Lawrence river was beautiful.

Quebec City, Quebec

5 out of 5
Quebec City is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. Make sure to walk thru the Old and new sections of the city.

Montreal, Quebec

5 out of 5
We did not have an excursion in Montreal this visit.

5 out of 5
We disembarked the ship in a timely fashion and walked straight to the awaiting bus to the airport.
