Review summary
Pretty much have said it all--a great experience on a lovely, well run ship
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Small ships make for easy on.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Food was excellent, drinks overpriced compared to other cruise lines.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
A small ship has limited possibilities, but they kept us busy enough. More spacing between activities would have been nice as we often had to choose one activity over another.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
It wasn't like the mega ships, but for the size of the Veendam we were very pleased with the entertainment. Their production company and house band are unbelievable. Andthere was a nice mix of show types-music, comedy, production shows--everything you need and lots of standing ovations
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
The crew was friendly considering we feel they are understaffed. They got it all done with a smile, but seemed frazzled at times.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
One of the cleanest, most elegant ships we have been on. Not being able to go through on deck 7 was a bit of a hassle, but we figured out the drill and got a bit more exercise because of it.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Very comfortable and roomy cabin with so many drawers we only used half of them. The split closet was a nice touch so we could keep our things separate. Everything worked perfectly. Our two stewards Heri and Made were excellent. Only complaint was that they decided to do balcony maintenance during our stay which involved one afternoon of loud rust removing sanders followed by drippy, sticky sealer and the on the next day the balcony was painted which had us missing two days of balcony use due to the odor and wet paint. situation
Ship tip
If you want a quiet, elegant cruise with the opportunity to interact easily with fellow passengers the Veendam is a great choice. Do not expect wild partying, but just enough night life and activities to make for a lovely time.
This port is lovely and if never visited before be sure to get out of town to see the gorgeous lakes and volcanic areas. Did not take an excursion since this was our 4th visit. Just enjoyed the port area.
Halifax is loaded with history--the Titanic connections here is huge. The Citadel, Titanic cemetery, the gardens and museums are wonderful. And a trip out to Peggy's Cove is a nice way to spend some time. Did not take an excursion as have been to Halifax before on an extended land tour.
Another great place to stroll the streets. The church of St. Savior has lovely Tiffany stained glass windows and is an easy walk from the dock. It also is a good place for those looking to shop as it has very interesting stores and boutiques. And of course, if you are looking to sample lobster you will have a gazillion choices. Did not take an excursion as have been to Bar Harbor multiple times.
As mentioned before, small ships make for easy on-off. Immigration, luggage handling and excellent scheduling of departure times made for the best disembarkation we have ever experienced...and we cruise a lot
