Review summary

This ship was (was!) once great but age has taken its toll, and when combined with poor staff in the dining room, even the great cabin steward we had (Ali) could not save this cruise. We did take Veendam knowing it was older, but we liked that it docks right on Front Street in Downtown Hamilton, unlike most ships which because of their size must use the very out-of-the-way Naval Dockyard. That said, the ship is of an old design (built we were told in 1986) so there are some badly out-dated things (despite several updates) which become obvious: There is a huge step up from the cabin to the bathroom (no fun at 4 a.m.); we ended up with a bathtub, not a shower, which was cumbersome to get in and out of, and as very veteran cruisers we felt like things were just not good and did not work. The elevators were so poor (often 2 of 4 at a bank out of order) that most of us gave up and walked the stairs. Even the captain, during his "ask the captain" session admitted they are THE top complaint on his ship and HE hates them. That says a LOT!!! The staff of the rooms and front desk were super and the food in the Lido was good. I rarely eat in a Lindo, preferring the dining room, but staff in the Veendam dining room was so spotty and even uncaring that it was not pleasant. We only did dinners there every night as our table mates (we always get a large table on late seating) were wonderful, fun and will remain life-long friends. The food was at best so-so; items ordered did not always appear and despite apologizing repeatedly especially after I went to the purser's office and griped, the bosses in the dining room seemed unable to corral their staff into doing a good job! Finally, and this is a symptom of modern obese times, between the elevators being on the fritz so much AND the ship having so many folks in electric wheelchairs trying to get anywhere ranged from difficult to impossible, which did make the cruise less-than-pleasant.
