Review summary

Most favorite part of the cruise: Having booked through and getting the great rate that we received, our expectations were set accordingly, as our accommodations were placed on Deck 4, the lowest passenger deck on the Veendam. However, while the room was adequately 'typical' for 2 people in an oceanview stateroom on this shorter ship, the bathroom was better than expected as we had a nice tub instead of the stall shower that we previously had on the huge Liberty of the Seas. Remember that, while you have choices about almost everything else that you do on board, your stateroom is fixed for the duration.

Least favorite part: Although I am a gambler of low frequency and low means, cruise lines are notorious for taking advantage of their supremacy as the 'House' because they shift more of the odds in their favor than what you would find in a typical land-based casino. Plus, on the Veendam, there was no Craps table, the game that I usually play. Ok, vacation cruises are not primarily about gambling; got it.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Each evening, the dining room waiters, ambience, menu, meal preparation and taste satisfaction level was par excellence. Dining in the buffet room, which is open for service the longest period of time each day, while very good, it was 'hit and miss' as some offerings were repeated on consecutive days. However, you will always find something that you can enjoy.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The Veendam is an older ship and kept clean but some of the elevators (2 banks of 4) had occasional downtime. However, accessibility on this shorter ship was very convenient.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Headboard backs up to porthole, so you can't place a chair there. Bathroom unexpectedly had a tub rather than a stall shower. A safe but no mini-frig in this room. Overall, the room was reasonably suitable.

Ship tip

On our cruise, departing on 5/20/17, there were very few children and adolescents and, therefore, a higher mean age. As a result, there were quite a few passengers with walkers and transportation chairs yet all seemed to traverse this shorter ship reasonably well and there were ramps all over.
