Inconsistent quality of food & not handicapped accessible throughout the ship
My favorite part of the cruise was meeting a lot of interesting people and the very friendly & always cheerful staff. I was disappointed in the quality of food and found it to be inconsistent. It was average at times and excellent at times, but not consistent. I am disabled which the cruise line knew when I made reservations. The only question I was asked when booking the cruise was whether or not I needed a wheel chair accessible suite. Since my wheel chair collapses I did not need a larger doorway into our suite. However, there was a step up into the bathroom with metal edging that I found troubling and a bit dangerous during the night. Also, the tub was higher than a normal tub which did not make it disabled friendly. The one time I used it I fell both getting into it and out of it. The remainder of the cruise I had to take sponge baths and go the the salon to have my hair washed. When we reported the issue to the Front Desk, we were offered a step stool that was not anchored into position and told we would have to sign a waiver of liability so clearly the staff considered it a danger. I declined the stool and was then offered dinner at one of the specialty restaurants which amounted to a $20 compensation for not being able to bathe the entire cruise. I declined as it was our final night on board and we had already made plans to join our friends in the regular dining room. Also, as part of selecting a suite, the literature stated we would have access to a vast variety of DVD's to watch in our cabin. We tried twice to rent a DVD and were told once it was unavailable and the second time that there would be over an hour long wait to have it delivered to our suite. The written literature about our suite did not live up to what was written & promised in those areas. Also, fresh flowers were part of the deal and we have 4 tiny white daisies in a miniature vase that were never switched out. Our cabin stewards, however, were delightful and tried to be as helpful as possible. After sailing on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships in the past, I would have to say the Veendam was our least favorite ship and we will not be repeat passengers.

Fresh fruit, ice, and flowers are included in the cost of a suite, but you have to ask for them -- they will not be supplied unless you ask. Also, we found the drink cards (soda in our case) was not worth the cost. We were left with high balances on both our cards.
