We enjoyed our m/s Veendam cruise from Quebec City to Boston very much. The unseasonably cold weather did not interfere with having a good time! The evening shows were excellent and provided a nice variety. Our stateroom was very comfortable and we enjoyed the Lanai deck feature of being able to walk out on the deck, get our exercise as well as sit in the reserved deck chairs. The cuisine was wonderful although we made one poor main meal selection on one evening in the main dining room. The buffet food provided plenty of selection and was tasty. The main dining room cuisine and the special Italian dining room food was equal to most first class restaurants in quality. Room service for breakfast was very good. Our main "beef" was that when you do not book an dinner table for the entire week you are definitely treated on a second class basis by the dining room staff. This is true weather you book a table for dinner 2 days in advance or whether you arrive to be seated spontaneously. Additionally, the staff either does not understand the reservation system or makes lies about your pre-booked reservation. For example, after a bad seating situation having made the dinner reservation 36 hours in advance, the Matre'D booked the same table for me for the last 3 evenings at the same time. When our party arrived the following evening, the host claimed my reservation time had been changed which it had not. The Matre'D took care of the situation but the experience continued a frustration as essentially being treated in a second class way. I won't go into the one breakfast experience in the main dining room which was even more bothersome with respect to seating. I spoke at length to the dining room officer about the issues and he did acknowledge issues and these issues clearly need to be corrected. Bottom line the dining room handling put the 5 star cruise in a 3 to 4 star category. I rated it 4 stars to be fair to all other aspects which were excellent.
