The ship is over a decade old, but certain touches make the Veendam the better ship in the Holland America mid-size fleet, in my opinion. I especially liked the library/internet lounge, with over 10 computers and large, leather chairs and huge library. And the kitchen addition to the movie theatre is wonderful.

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
I was most surprised by the food in the formal dining room. This is my 4th cruise on a Holland America ship; my last cruise was three years ago. The food in the dining room was exquisite. The menu was more accessible to American tastes, and prepared divinely. On our cruise, we had two separate dining times, but freestyle seating (no assignments to a specific table). We met a different couple, or group of people, every time, a system we much preferred.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
As a charter, we had our own entertainment (through Olivia), not the usual found on the Holland America ships. They were excellent. We picked excursions at the lowest end of the activity scale, and unfortunately, they weren't very interesting. The bus tour into Dubrovnik, especially, was a complete bore: driving for 3 hrs with nothing much at the end.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The ship staff were very nice, very eager to please. Sometimes they were a bit too friendly, stopping to gab a bit.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The Veendam is getting older, but its still shipshape, and quite beautiful. The public areas were always kept clean and orderly, and were a pleasure to spend time in.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Our veranda-less room was very nice, but got smaller when we found we couldn't stow a rather large piece of luggage. We ended up with too much furniture at that point, and stumbled around the room a lot.

Pros: The food has certainly improved!

Cons: The excursions were mostly boring.

Recommends Veendam? Yes!
