Excellent value for money cruise from Southampton by yorghan1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

One thing I forgot to mention, was that Tui don't really have formal nights. It's called dress to impress so you don't necessarily need to wear tuxedos

Wonderful ship and crew by jean1937

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We paid over £400 for our excursions in June and our tickets weren’t in our cabin when we arrived. My daughter spent hours in the queue at Guest Reservations trying to sort it out.

Lovely ship food is amazing..cant fault it so far apart from the 3hr standing que to board which was a total nightmare!!.2 people collapsed!..unbeliable!! If you smoke ..total discrimination on board this ship!..2 choices stand in the wind and rain...or under cover in a small horrible area that never gets cleaned..cruised a few times and never experienced anything like this 😡 ..!!

Recently returned from my very... by thedodge65

Sail Date: /

Recently returned from my very first cruise, 14 day Baltic cruise, visited some wonderful destinations, Tallinn was beautiful and had plenty going on, St Petersburg was wonderful, so much history. Took an excursion to see the Russian ballet and found it very interesting and enjoyed every minute, you had to admire the skill and poise of the performers. Berlin was also one of my favourites, although it’s a long day as it’s a 3 hour coach trip there and back from Warnemunde, but well worth it. The ship I thought was very good, although I have nothing to compare it with as it were my first cruise, but what made it for me were the staff, every single one of them down to the room cleaners and the guys cleaning out the toilets were so friendly and welcoming it was unreal..each one would say hello and wish you a good day and they always had a smile on their faces, well impressed. The food in every restaurant was of a very high standard, but I would say that surf and turf and Kora La were my favourites. Michelin stars coming your way guys, excellent!! Plenty to do on the ship, although the only criticism I would say is that on sea days if the weather wasn’t good enough to sit outside during the day then there wasn’t enough seating in the rooms (live bar, atrium, glass house etc) to accommodate everybody However it’s only a minor point and I’m sure every other cruise liner has the same predicament on rainy days Overall very impressed and can’t wait for our next cruise, would highly recommend the Marella Discovery

Just returned from the Baltic... by plantycat

Sail Date: /

Just returned from the Baltic cruise today. The places we visited were amazing especially st Petersburg with all its palaces , Stockholm with the vasa museum and Copenhagen with the Tivoli and canal cruise. Although the Discovery is a step up from all the older ships in the fleet all of which i have been on more than once. I feel standards have dropped and corners have been cut in comparison, however we still had a great time and would recommend it.

Beautiful Sunny Baltic by doughnut2k

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We really enjoyed every destination, helped by the warm sunny weather but St Petersburg was outstanding. We had organised a two day trip with SPB tours and can't rate them highly enough. Most places can be done by Hop on hop off bus and Scandanavia is beautiful and clean but a bit on the expensive side. All the destinations excepted the Euro but a little bit of local change is needed for public toilets. The ship is a little dated compared to a lot of other cruise lines but the staff, entertainment and food and drink were excellent. Overall we had a wonderful time

Not the wonderful cruise we were sold. Overpriced. by JacknSam

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We paid a huge amount for this cruise. However, this was not worth the price. Not even half. There was a lack of seats in the communal areas, everything was designed to get more money from you. The excursions were more expensive than we have seen from other cruise companies. The tui agent didnt really know much about the holiday they sold us. The food is average, breakfast was better. Entertainment was good for effort, however slightly lacking in skill, and became monotonous towards the end. The ports locations saved an otherwise less than average holiday. Will not be booking with tui again. Ever.

Well what can I say... by kev79

Sail Date: /

Well what can I say after reading the reviews we didn't expect much, but how wrong they are, we had a fantastic time on this fire and ice cruise, yes the ship is old but the staff are amazing, the food is good and in the specialist steak restaurant it's excellent. The entertainment was not to our tastes but its a free bar so who's complaining. B12 are a excellent band. Having been with p&o before we would definitely go with merella again.

Great Trip by StuLiddle

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We had a very enjoyable time on Discovery. I'm probably being picky but there were a few grumbles. 1. The food portions in the main dining rooms were small. One evening we had bruschetta as a started and there were 2 pieces the size of a 50p! Calzone pizza was the size of a small pasty etc. Service was great though. The portions in the speciality restaurants were good. You can, of course, eat from the minute you get up until you go to bed! We tried to save ourselves for dinner so w were a little disapointed. 2. The main lounges were always full and we found it tricky to get seats. Like wise in the Island buffet. Luckily we had decent weather so we could sit outside. 3. Live lounge is souless. Very strange space. The band we heard in there was very good though. Good girl singer. 4. The shows were good. Very hard working, talented show company but on a 7 night cruise to the fjords with an average age of 65+ I'd question how wise it was to include the "Festival" show, which included modern pop/rock music, when there were other shows that weren't scheduled in. 5. The Venue, was a lovely space but seemed under used. Some of game show type entertainment that was not well followed and a few dance classes when the Atrium was used for other things. Could be a good cabaret room. Our cabin steward, Willy, was great. All bar and restuarant staff were great. Favourite bar was Bar 11. Nice views and great cocktails. The speciality restaurants were good. Surf & Turf and Kora La. The small sushi bar in Kora La was under used and maybe not situated in the best place. We had a fabulous meal in Surf & Turf, the steak was beautiful. Ship layout was good. Our room was clean, and well appointed. Nothing missing. We had a lovely time. Good ports and thankfully very good weather. Would we try Marella again? Yes definitely.

We're just back from Wonders... by Debzy1985

Sail Date: /

We're just back from Wonders of the Fjords on Discovery 1 today and thought i'd review what I thought. We were first time cruisers travelling with a 7 year old so are able to view from all angles. Cabin: We booked an inside cabin on decks 2/3 and were allocated 2091 towards the rear of the ship. We're not ones for lounging around during the day and tend to use these places as a base or as some would put it 'a sleep, a shower, a S**t and a shave'.We found it to be the perfect size for the 3 of us, 2 singles on the bottom and one bunk folded down. The cases fitted nicely in the wardrobe space so we nicely out the way. Drawer space was more than adequate as was hanging space. Beds were comfortable and 'view from the bridge' on the TV gave us the slightest light at night. The bathroom was simlar to those found in a static caravan which we're used to from previous holidays. Shower was more than powerful enough. can't fault it at all!! 7yo view: 'it had 3 beds and it was awesome, the shower was tickly' Food/Restaurants: First place we visited on board was the snack shack. The food here was cooked to perfection and ideal for a grab and go snack. We also frequented around islands for breakfast, lunch and dinner/tea and found there was always a good selection and somethings we would all eat. We didn't go to the MDR however did pay for a meal at 'Surf n Turf' as it was my birthday whist on board. The £28.95 pp was well worth it. Excellent service and the food was delicious. I recommend the Angus Sirloin steak and the New York Cheesecake. 7 yo view 'the food was brilliant, my favourite was the fruit and crackers and also the pastries in the morning in Islands' Bars/drinks: Service could be slow at times but if theres a queue you can do no more. We're not big alcohol drinkers so mainly stuck to soft drinks. The mocktails were a particular favourite. Good choice for the basic AI package. 7yo view: I liked the fruit smoothie mocktail. Kids Club: Loved that the kids got an invitation to go to kids club on the first sea day. My son loved meeting new people and the activities they did. The girls even managed to teach him to tie his laces, we've been trying for over a year to do that!! He loved every minute, from breakfast club to the evening club activities. It gave us a much needed break and gave him the chance to still be a kid whilst stuck on board with his parents. The Mat Hatters tea at sea was great and he's not stopped talking about Splash! Live!! if you're travelling with kids i'd defo recommend it. Theres no max or min times you can use it as long as your child is registered. 7yo view: It was EPIC!! My favourite was Scout at Splash Live!!! Entertainment: Not everyones cup of tea but we enjoyed the live music (B12's and Taylor Made) and the daily quizzes gave us something to do particularly on the sea days. Not so sure about Nice and Easy, Nice and NOT SO easy would suit it better. Not enough seating in the atrium/ live lounge but not much ease to do with the space. 7 yo view: I liked the quizzes Staff: Not a member of staff from Cabin Stewards to bar staff walked by us without a smile and a morning/evening. The only time I saw misserable faces was when they had to do drill lol!! My son was hi-5'd regularly and everyone said hello to him in passing. 7yo view 'I liked the hi-5s' I think this is pretty much as much as I can review about the ship. I hope it can help someone to make decisions about cruising with Marella Discovery!!

Spring Repositioning Cruise by Happycruiser57

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Marella Discovery is in need of TLC in some areas. The cabin was "tired" in places e.g. dressing table drawers, round the bottom of the shower and definitely needs new shower curtains, ones that are long enough. Experienced some issues - double booking of cabin, changed aircraft after check in, delays with luggage collection at Malaga airport. Coach late at airport for pick up leading to a delayed sail away one hour. Cruise itself was very enjoyable. Didn't use MDR but Gallery 47 most nights. Delicious.

Just come back off the... by plantycat

Sail Date: /

Just come back off the Discovery, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. The ship is a nice ship and an improvement in facilities, however there has been a noticeable drop in service and standards and those little touches they used to do that made things feel special. During the voyage there was an outbreak of stomach upsets so increased hygiene measures were implemented which included not being able to serve yourself with tea or coffee in the buffet restaurant yet you could serve yourself food from the stations handling serving spoons and spatulas , they had a crew member at the entrances asking passengers to sanitize their hands yet fellow crew members entering and leaving were not sanitizing . There was a power outage at one point whilst we were in our cabin which left us in the pitch dark we could see nothing, I would have thought that there would have been at least a small emergency light so you could see your way to the door without the danger of falling over something in the event of a real emergency. All in all we had a good time the food was good and the entertainment was mostly good .we will be back on the ship in August, just hope they learn to utilise the big screen by the pool and not continually play that infernal film of the two discovery ships docked over and over again every day on a loop for hours on end.

Returned on the 1st April... by SnDafloat

Sail Date: /

Returned on the 1st April from two weeks on Marella Discovery . Had reservations before starting this trip because of some reviews , but you have to make your own mind up , we did a cruise on the Dream a few years ago , same thing , few negative reviews, but we had a great time. Firstly you have to do your research , she s 24 years old , so some things may look worn there may be an odd bit of rust . We had a balcony cabin on deck 7 , port side ,aft of amidships, slight vibration when underway , but nothing bad ,not enough to stop us sleeping or enjoying the cabin . Eating was fine , never had a cold meal, but we always eat relatively early , ate in all the restaurants, buffet ok ,but I m not a fan of walking around with my food , had breakfast there a couple of times and one evening meal , otherwise had breakfast in 47 , and some evening meals , most evening meals taken in Gallery 47(Italian based), as we were adopted by Yarra , one of the waitresses, never had a bad meal in either , most lunches taken in the Glasshouse if we were onboard , staff there good ,Ilya was always pleasant to talk to.Ate at Kora La and Surf and Turf(fee applies) excellent food and service. On sea days , sun beds could be a problem , got on the sun deck after breakfast, and most bed s were taken or had towels on them , one man was saving eleven beds , with nobody on any of them , later in the morning crew were putting notices on vacant beds with towels . All in all we enjoyed the ship , and ports of call , and the crew were excellent ,
