Symphony of the Seas

9 Night Western Mediterranean (Barcelona Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 14, 2018

Ship: Symphony of the Seas

Cabin type: Balcony

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 3 years ago

Review summary

The ship is beautiful. The sheer number of passengers (6800) can be daunting. Reservations are necessary for a number of venues and shows. Some of the venues were just too small for activities such as the card room bingo and trivia.

Expedited boarding worked like a charm.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Thoroughly enjoyed the extra selection of dining venues

Solarium Bistro

5 out of 5

Light and glass this venue is at the front of the ship. Buffet food. Same great food as Windjammer but less selection and not crowded with young kids

Windjammer Marketplace

The layout is great. Lots of room to sit. Food is great. Love the musical steps leading up to it

Jamie's Italian

I don’t know if it was because it is Europe because the upcharge for the non complimentary restaurants was much higher than the Caribbean cruises on RC. I found the food delicious but not worth the up charge for pasta.

Izumi

We had the dining package and you can’t do the hibachi on it. We Jad the sushi a la carte. Excellent but huge portions. We literally could not eat all the food allowed on the package

Chop's Grille

5 out of 5

Chops has been getting a bit tired and boring however on this sailing of Symphony of the Seas they upped their game both service and food

Excursion to the Drach Caves was easy and delightful.

Marseille (Provence), France

Took the RC tour to Avignon. Although it rained most of the day it did not dampen the beauty of this historic city. Visited the palace of the popes

La Spezia, Italy

Saw the Cinque Terre by small boat on an RC excursion. Gorgeous day and wonderful typical seafaring lunch included.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

You have to take a shuttle bus as this is a working commercial port. We rented a car and went to the necropolis at Tarquinia.

Naples, Italy

Most people went to Pompeii or Capri. We went to the main museum in Naples

Valencia, Spain

Took the free shuttle and delighted in walking around the old City.

Disembarkation

We were to take the next cruise back to back on this ship but it was on charter for five days in the interim. RC offered to store any baggage for during those five days so that we would have less to lug around while we toured during those 5 days. Brilliant!! Kudos to RC on that. Disembarking was a breeze but taxis were in short supply as on the two main port access bridges was close for repairs.
