This was our first cruise on Sun Princess and we found it to be a very pleasant ship to cruise on, not quite as modern as the Saphhire Princess, but like the Sea Princess it seemed to have a very welcoming feel to it!
Embarkation
5 out of 5
The embarkation from White Bay Cruise Terminal was very smooth and problem-free.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
The dining experience was again first class. This time, in contrast with our two previous voyages, we made use of the formal dining arrangement on some of the evenings. The wait staff were excellent, and the food superb! It made a delightful variation to the constant flow of good quality food in the Horizon Court, with the Norman Love chocolate deserts being a highlight!
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
The weather sadly was not the greatest for on-deck activities such as swimming or Movies Under the Stars with most days being over clouded, windy and at times wet, but we enjoyed many of the other on-board activities such as the gym facilities and the shopping boutiques. We especially enjoyed the art auctions.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
The onboard entertainment was of a good quality, with the piano man and the two female guitarists worthy of special mention, although when they played in the Wheelhouse Bar we found them very difficult to hear. Perhaps some thought needs to be given to improving the audio system in there.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Our stateroom steward, Cenen, was very helpful without being obtrusive. His nightly towelling animal figurines were a delight to see and always brought a smile to our faces at the end of the day. In fact, we found the staff on board seemed very happy and friendly, on a par with the staff on our previous trip with the Sea Princess.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
It was similar in layout and design to our first cruise ship, Sea Princess, which we loved! As with that ship, Sun Princess is showing its age a little, but was still kept clean and well-maintained.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
This inside stateroom was comfortable enough, but a few flaws need to be noted if you plan to book it. It is towards the back of the boat, which normally we favour due to its proximity to the gym facilities, but in rough seas such as we experienced the last day or so it felt very rough at times! Also, the layout of the room is not very good. The bathroom opens directly onto the bedroom, so if you use the bathroom facilities at night the light shines directly onto the bed, unnecessarily waking your bed partner! The cabin door also looks directly onto the bed, so if the steward comes to the door, or room service, anyone in the bedroom is forced to take evasive action!
Ship tip
Enjoy the medium-sized ship experience, the traditional promenade deck, and the inclusive spa and sauna!
No tour booked, but we enjoyed a walk along the shoreline visiting the markets, and thoroughly enjoyed that experience. The local band playing music dockside was entertaining, and their enthusiasm was commendable.
