Sail Date: May 01, 2007
Ship: Statendam
Cabin Type: Inside
Traveled As: Family (older children)

Statendam is an older ship and is starting to look its age. It lacks the pizzaz and features of newer, larger ships. The activities are sedentary and poorly publicized on board. However, food and service remain excellent.

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food, even in the Lido (cafeteria) was uniformly excellent, served hot or cold as appropriate, and the service was outstanding. There is an extra-charge restaurant (Pinnacle Grill) where we had the only lousy meal of the entire cruise. Avoid it!

5 out of 5
Entertainment was old style (think Las Vegas) but energetic and well executed. When the present complement of octagenarian passengers no longer cruises, HAL may have to rethink its customer base.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
We were incorrectly assigned to the late seating. Upon pointing this out, the ship's staff merely recited the corporate line - "We can't do that" or "We have so many passengers that we can't possibly accommodate your request." Only when pressed, were we accommodated but we were made to feel that we were the passengers from hell simply by asking the Line to provide what we had contracted for.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
We cruised during a "condition red" during which appropriate precautions were taken to prevent the spread of a virus that had spread through the ship on an earlier cruise. This was very well handled by Holland America.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had the least expensive stateroom. It was well equipped and surprisingly large.

Pros: Good food and great service

Cons: Pinnacle Grill - avoid it like the plague

Recommends Statendam? No.
