A So-So Experience

Sail Date: May 01, 2007

Reviewed: 9 years ago

Traveled As: Large Group

Room Type: Inside

The ship overall is older and somewhat cramped. We did not feel safe on the ship. The first night we were onboard, we saw another passenger wandering the halls of our floor. We entered our room to get something and were waiting for our friends (whose room was directly across from ours). Our door was open very briefly and when I (the mrs.) walked toward it to knock on our friends door, the person we had seen wandering was waiting directly to the left, standing there, trying to peek in to see if we were in the room.
After midnight, the ship was very deserted and the women in our group did not feel safe walking to our rooms so we always made sure to have the guys escort us back.

Pros: Rock climbing wall, Dining in Illusions dining room

Cons: Hallways smelled, did not feel safe, older ship, didn't get to go to CocoCay

Recommends Sovereign of the Seas (RETIRED)? No.

Cabin / Stateroom
Size: TOO SMALL. No amenities to speak of. Stateroom was very dated (eighties style) with cheap, old formica vanity area and closet. Bathroom was also dated and extremely cramped.
Ship Quality
The ship is small. I have cruised on it once before prior to its 2003-04 renovation and did not notice as big of a difference as I had hoped. The public bathroom nearest the pool was shut down for most of the third day on the ship and another bathroom on the floor below was locked. Some of the lounges were nicer than others. The only really nice one was Boleros, the Latin themed nightclub. The dance club, Voltage, had a pretty decent DJ, but the appearance of the club was rather shabby.
The pool area was ok, but got very crowded at times.
Food and Dining
There are several dining options onboard, but by far the only great one was the dining room (we were assigned to Illusions). We tried the Windjammer buffet for breakfast the first morning and were extremely disappointed. There was no logic to the lines and it was very chaotic. The food was not hot and was extremely poor quality.
We did not visit Johnny Rockets. We did try Sorrentos and the pizza seemed just like frozen pizza that was put in an oven for a few minutes. Ok in a pinch (i.e. to hold you over until dinner) but not ok for a meal.
The dining room was FANTASTIC though. We ate dinner there every night and the food and service was excellent. The desserts were good but there is room for improvement there. Breakfast in the dining room was far superior to the Windjammer breakfast, however the OJ was watered down and not cold and the service was not as good since we didn't get "our" waiter.
Service and Staff
Dining service was EXCELLENT. The rest of the ship's crew was pretty good too. Overall, a very friendly and lighthearted crew.
The variety show definitely has some room for improvement. Also, the group line dancing on the pool deck was really silly. The entertainment was not first class. The rock climbing wall was great, but had limited hours.
