Holland America is THE cruise line to take. I have cruised on Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Disney (great if you have kids) and by far the best is Holland America. Why? Because they have a variety of activities at no additional charge that appeal to a wide variety of tastes: bridge lessons, cooking demonstrations, digital workshops, fitness workouts, dancing lessons, mixology (drink mixing) lessons, gambling lessons as well as the usual trivia games, movies, crafts, fabulous shows, marvelous food, and presentations on the ports being visited. If you want more from your cruise than lying by the pool, this is the cruise line for you...for ANY destination.

They have daily alcoholics anonymous meetings, meetings arranged for singles/solo travelers, meetings for GLBT folks, Catholic mass, and Jewish Sabbat.

I recommend avoiding the balcony cabins. While it is nice to go out onto the balcony to have a cup of coffee in the morning, we could only do that twice during our 3-week cruise because of weather. In addition, in order to have access to the balcony, the configuration requires the beds to be next to the door, with the couch and desk next to the balcony. That meant we had to go around the beds each time we wanted to get to the couch or desk. There is very little room at the food of the bed. Don't waste the money upgrading to a balcony.

Ship Tip

Very easy to get around. If you arrive by train, you can take either the metro or tram to the terminal. It is cheap, reliable, clean and easy to find. The tourist information office in the train depot is great about helping. Don't bother with a taxi.
