Not a good cruise by janfran

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

This Holland America cruise was not nearly as good as other HAL cruises I took in the past. The information desk staff were not ar all helpful and actually they were borderline rude.

Very Good Cruise by sgartner

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

Pros.

We enjoyed the ports.

On Roseau, Dominica Elise, with SHAPE gave us a wonderful walking tour of the historic district. This should not be missed.  She is very knowledgeable and a good communicator.

On St Maarten, we had David with Bernard Tours.  Great 4 hour tour of both French and Dutch sectors.  Informative and good cross section of the island.

Food

The food in the dining room was very good.  The Pinnacle was even better.  Finally, Le Cirque was one of the best meals we ever had.  A+ overall.

That said, the buffet in the Lido had some luke warm to cold dishes.  HAL needs to work on this issue.

Staff

Our cabin crew and the crew in general were just first rate.  They we both pleasant and helpful.

Entertainment

The entertainment was below par.  Although the singers were good, the dancing production looked amateurish.  The country act and the comedy were not very good.  This whole aspect should be improved.

Condition.

Generally, the ship condition was good.  Although the staff keeps the ship well maintained, Rotterdam is due for a major renovation.

Exercise Facility - Although the equipment was well maintained, it was old and not up to normal standards with other cruise lines.

Overall - We had a great time and would highly recommend this cruise.

Holiday Cruise by barry37271620

My favorite part of the ship was the Lido deck. Good food and nice place to lounge. For the most part the crew was very attentive to everyone's need, although it seem to deteriorate a little at the end of the cruise.

Great holiday cruise by Christa14095321

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

i am very pleased with Holland America. I was worried at first due to the ship is older and we have been going on the new RCCL and Princess ships which have lots to do.  The best part of this ship was the BB Blue band. They were awesome. The best cruise ship band I have ever seen. The staff on the ship were better than the other cruise lines and the food was better also. No complaints for us. Will do it again next year.

Wonderful with Holland America in the Caribbean by goldnkey

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

Had a very relaxing cruise - we were well attended to by the staff, and the accommodations and food were excellent.  Some, not all, of the entertainment was disappointing - but the day to day living was excellent.  Would definitely recommend this cruise line to others!!

Southern Carabbean MS Rotterdam by ldbhistory

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

Dated ship needing maintenance, short on staff. Small facilities and low end entertainment. I'm a diabetic and need a refrigerator. Not available had to pay $2 per day to get a refrigerator. Items ordered requested as part of registration not provided. Had to make 2-3 calls per item and at two different places. Assumed "Sorry we missed that I will take care of it" - no you have to call. Eggs to order cook scorched the omelettes every morning. Even after being asked to turn the fire down. Last day out of spite the omelet was burnt. Book excursions on cruise.com or some outside site and save $10/person per the same excursion. Outside excursions use smaller buses which allow them to get back in the villages and side streets and see a lot more. Small group and more personal. Guides are locals and love to share their home with you.

Holiday Cruise in HAL by AAMB

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

Service, live entertainment, food and ports of call were for the most part fantastic. The fellow passengers however were older than in other cruise lines, and that had positive and negative implications. Positive: food, entertainment and cleanliness were above other lines. Negative: Teen and young adult activities were boring or non-existent. Also, bring your own multiple port outlet.  There are none around the ship and only one in your cabin.

Rotterdam Ramblings by kscornhusker

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Probably the favorite part of our cruise was the fellowship with the other passengers.  The ports that were visited were very nice and the activities available at these ports were excellent.

The food on the Rotterdam was very good, with ample opportunities to sample food from several cultures.

The evening programs were spectacular and were very diverse in nature and presentation.

Overall the cruise was great.

Relaxing and enjoyable cruise by sweetcruiser

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

This cruise is not for young people, but for seniors its great. Very quiet and relaxing. Service was impeccable. The staff and workers were the friendliest and most helpful of any cruise I have taken. Food was very good. The Dive (gourmet burgers and hotdogs) is great, as is the made to order pizza. Rooms were nice. Ports were OK. Half Moon Cay has the most beautiful water, and pristine beach I have ever seen in the Caribbean.Only a few complaints.

1. No phones in rooms. You had to click through 40 channels to get to one with the time (old remotes) and TV.

2. The basketball court is over the Lido Buffet. So when someone is playing, the noise is terrible. The ceiling shakes with the banging of the ball.

3. There weren't enough fun things to do. A few but only 3 or 4 times in 10 days.

4. Not enough good music (stuffy opera, classical). However the BB King Blues Band is fantastic!!!

Met the friendliest and most wonderful people, and that made the cruise great.

Once in a lifetime cruise itinerary! by joem124

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Transatlantic

The itinerary was spaced perfectly and bunched in fours with sea days in between.  Ports of call ideal even for the novice.  The ship is showing her age but we had no difficulties.  Rotterdam continues to have excellent service.  Food is being modified to less and limited variety.

CRUISING ALONG... by rhulgan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Transatlantic

It was a nice cruise with some improvement to be done on the ship dancers, activities onboard and menu variety.  We loved ports of Ponta Delgada( Azores), Livorno, Malta, and Madeira, Portugal.  We enjoyed the Olympia and the Mercouri Vineyard tour.  Great fun, museum and tour of estate.  We did miss not visiting the ports in France.   We believe it was a good value, if they keep the quality up!

cruise left a lot to be desired by mcmulling

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Transatlantic

Met some great people but there were real problems with this ship - it ought to be mothballed!  They couldn't get the AC working - never had that problem on eight other cruise lines.  Was told by fellow passenger at the end that it was the thermostat but they kept working on the unit in the ceiling.  Many times we had no cold water.  Turn on the sink faucet to cold and hot water came out; turn to  hot and scalding water came out.  I could change fiver times a day.  wait an hour, cold water again; another hour no cold.  Impossible to take a shower some mornings because of scalding water; three days before the end I demanded a place to shower; they provided a key to another room to use for showers only.  Many water leaks on the ships and blowers in every  hallway to blow the carpets dry.  My wife and many others developed bronchitis which she still has.  Got an expensive bill from their medical facility.  I hear Holland America ships are great but no this one.  Service was really good but the food was mediocre at best.

Tendering was awful; 2 hours from the time we entered the line until we landed on the pier by dbeal531

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Room stewards were great, very clean rooms everyday.  Good food, not great, but good. Tours were great, although the Halifax all day bus tour should have reduced the number of participants (two groups instead of one large group) and provide the tour guide and participants with headsets.

Loved It! by barbsurz

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

My husband and I really enjoyed the cruise!  The ports of call were awesome with beautiful colors in Canada and New England.  The Rotterdam was very nice...crew outstanding.  Was a little disappointed with the entertainment and food but that wouldn't stop us from cruising with Holland American again...enjoyed the smaller ship of 1500.

epasolo by epasolo

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Perfect cruise for seniors, middle age, possibly grown ups, but not necessarily for teenagers, juniors and kids. Impeccable service by ship's crew and staff. Great food selection and quality. Efficient, functional, beautiful ship's interior design, layout, color, and appurtenances. Dull, unappealing, very poor exterior paint (black?) selection. Truthfully, it looks more like a cargo ship than a cruise ship. If you're receptive, value your guest's feedback and serious about improving the ship's exterior appearance, please... please... I beg you to change the color black to something other than black.

A Perfect Cruise for Adults and Retirees. by microbt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

This cruise was great.  The food was excellent, the entertainment was just great and the tone and pace of life on the ship was very comfortable.  All staff treated use with respect and were eager to help.  Our waiter and assistant were wonderful and dining in both the main dining room and the Lido was very pleasurable.  An extra benefit is that it was not too loud nor was the air conditioning too cold.  On shore or off, we had a wonderful time.

The ports of call were excellent.  We enjoyed our time in each city.

Note:  We appreciated how the captain and cruise director kept us informed as our itinerary changed due to poor weather.  We appreciate their decision to keep us safe and comfortable.

In spite of bad weather, we had fun. The ship captain kept us informed of any changes due to weather. I think we will get on a cruise earlier in the season next time.

Wonderful cruise, lovely ship, friendly and helpful staff by esanchez38

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Favorite memory:  Sitting in the bar near La Fontaine dining room with our friends, having a cocktail and listening to the delightful piano/violin duet playing classical music before our 8 p.m. dinner. It was so elegant and relaxing--the pre-dinner ritual and the meal itself.  Almost everything about the cruise was top-notch.  Even the weather cooperated.  Our favorite ports were Bar Harbor and Charlottetown--and of course, Quebec City, where we disembarked (a day early).

Good getaway by halk

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Rotterdam Retired / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

We booked this cruise in hopes of seeing the fall colors in Canada and New England but the warm weather had delayed this.  Otherwise, the cruise had no issues.  It's an older ship (1997) but well maintained and all the systems were working well.  One thing to be aware of, bring a plug strip if you intend to plug things in - there is only 1 115v outlet in the cabin and the TV was plugged into it.

We enjoyed the food in the Italian restaurant and the steak/seafood restaurant (Pinnacle Grill).  Reservations in advance are a must for both of them.  The ship was full but we didn't feel crowded even on the Lido buffet lines. Food was decent but not outstanding (optional restaurants were excellent). Decent variety on menu and decent selection in Lido buffets.   Nice pastry and dessert items as well.

Staff was plenty friendly and competent.  Shows were OK nothing spectacular but we had a wonderful concert violin and pianist who would outstanding.

This was our first HAL cruise and we will go on them again.
