The menu was varied. The wait staff in the buffet was always willing to get your drinks. The dishes were cleared promptly. All the eating areas were clean. The Pinnacle Grill's food and service was excellent.
Onboard Activities

There are two pools on board. No rock-climbing or other such activities. We did not use the fitness center but they had a morning stretch class and an ab class. There is an excellent "walk-around deck" that was covered. Plenty of inside and outside places to sit and relax. They have a card room with daily bridge players. They also have daily computer lessons.

The two comics were excellent. Also, a Planet Earth II (movie) with live music, that was excellent.
Library

Lots of comfortable seating. Lots of books to read. There were also picture puzzles for you to work on. One puzzle had over 18,000 pieces.

If you are looking for a party ship, Holland America is not your line of choice. This cruise line is tradional crusing at its best.
We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam last March. Not a lot to do on the ship during the day but that’s what the ports are for. Sitting around the pool was great with NO loud bands or DJ. Piped in music was very relaxing. Our cabin steward was great. Always called us by name whenever he saw us and always asked how our port days were. Always smiling. Never had to ask for anything . We told him the first day we would like I’ve every night and we did. The first day our toilet was stuffed up, they came to fix it right away and never had a problem with it after that. The buffet was great,besides the food,the service was fantastic. The staff there was always smiling and friendly and willing to help. Dining room food was absolutely delicious. The Dive -In where they have hotdogs, hamburgers and French fries was excellent with the best hamburgers I’ve ever had. Pizza was made to order and you get the whole pizza not just a slice, and yummy Caesar salad. Loved everything.
