Anitquated Ship

Sail Date: December 07, 2006

Reviewed: 6 years ago

Traveled As: Large Group

Room Type: Oceanview

The ship was well taken care of, but the decor was in need of refurbishing. There were not enough places to have an unobstructed view of the Panama Canal or what we were sailing through and to from the front of the ship. Many of the windows were either in need of being replaced or cleaned. They seemed to be blurry or moist, resulting in a foggy view.

Pros: Sailing through the Panama Canal.

Cons: The Norwalk Virus outbreak and all the disabled old people

Recommends Regal Princess (RETIRED)? No.

We did the "Skywalk" tour. There were 5 skywalks and we were only allowed to walk on 3. We were told to wear long sleeved shirt and pants, etc. That appeared to be unnecessary since we were so hot. There weren't any bugs to speak of. The naturalist should have instructed people to be quiet. Some people in our group had to be told to "shut up" because they continued to talk loudly. We saw some wildlife, but we really needed to out there EARLY to see more animals and birds. The Pura Vida gardens wasn't fully utilized either. I read about the gardens later and found out we could have walked to the waterfall and that there were several on the grounds that we didn't even see. The gardens themselves were very nice and well kept. But the garden walk was very short. The food at the Pura Vida Gardens was adequate. The chicken was very tough.

We kayaked and snorkeled. The shore excursion kayak instructor was a bit heavy on the couple and woman comments. He obviously had dealt with some people who didn't know what they were doing and didn't take to instruction very easily. The experience was fine, but the instruction was a bit long for people who didn't really need it. His humor got old fast. The snorkeling was great. It was like being in an aquarium. We could have spent more time snorkeling and less time waiting around on shore for whatever. The map of downtown was terrible. We tried to find one of the museums and couldn't. We were told to look for the yellow building. Every building was yellow. There were some nice places to shop if that's what you wanted to do. Didn't eat on shore.

We did the Eco Birding Walk. They feed the birds at this park to ensure that visitors see something at all times. We were there in the heat of the day which is when the wildlife is resting. We did see some very interesting birds luckily. The guides were very helpful and tried very hard to spot and call the birds. They carried spotting scopes and set them up as soon as a bird was spotted. Again, instruction should have been given as to the behavior that was expected during the walk: stay together, be quiet, listen carefully, etc.
Don't Miss: The village is very picturesque. The bay is very nice.

We took the "Lights of Panama City" tour. It was disappointing because we didn't get to go into the cathedrals or walk the ruins at night, etc. The museum of the canal was all in Spanish, but the photos were great. I'm not sure that this tour was worth the money.
Don't Miss: Check out the molas created by the Cuna people.
