Radisson Diamond (RETIRED)

We traveled to Rome one week after September 11th. Our embarkation was seamless. Only 133 passengers on the ship. Service was exceptional throughout the cruise. The best we have encountered. We had a deck 9 balcony stateroom midship (we booked early), and it was a great location. The room was comfortable and clean, but was starting to show wear. We were offered a choice of one bottle of premium liquor, 2 bottles of regular liquor or 2 bottles of wine to put in our stateroom refrigerator. We took the wine, but ended up not drinking both bottles since wine was served with dinner. Wines served at dinner were very good. One night, my husband did not care for the red and was offered another choice of red. Very good food and accommodating service. Special requests will be filled if they know the day ahead. We requested chocolate souffle and had it the next night. One night, a group of us had a special Indian meal by request. The Diamond's sports deck was lowered a couple times during the cruise. It was so great to jet ski in the Mediterranean! Not too much going on activity-wise while at sea since so small a group of passengers, but this was a blessing. We did do trivia contests after tea time. The cocktail parties were the best of our nine cruises - very intimate. Very nice mix of age groups onboard. Even though my husband and I are in our mid-fifties, we became friends with two younger (late 20s or early 30s) couples. We enjoyed their exuberance! I don't know how well we will adjust to being nickel and dimed again on other cruise lines. So nice not to worry about tips. We had all the wine at dinner, bottled water and soft drinks, expresso, etc., that we wanted at no additional charge. Large containers of chilled bottled water awaited us at thge gangway as we departed from and returned to the ship after shore excursions. Entertainment was fine, they were not big productions, but good for a smaller ship. We are not big on late nightlife. We enjoyed our balcony and don't know if we can go back to a non-balcony stateroom. My only complaint, other than wear and tear in the stateroom, was not having our champagne waiting in our stateroom. This was not the fault of the ship's staff but a mixup with the home office that took several days to correct. However, the staff handled communications with the home office and eventually the mistake was resolved. I highly recommend the Radisson Diamond.
