Culinary arts was good. Service was excellent. Intimacy was best because of size of ship and lower number of people. Activities were of the right level. Able to relax and decompress.
The Antarctic 4 days was the best part of the cruise, followed by the Amazon. I highly recommend this cruise. The ports of call are varied and the excursions offered are quite varied and there is one to suit everyone's taste.
There were several best parts to the holiday cruise. The itinerary was very good because we visited a number of smaller and less traveled islands. The service and food were excellent on the ship. All of the shore excursions were purchased through HAL and were well worth the money. The Prinsendam is a small ship by today's standards, but we found it to be a better experience than the bigger options. Due to the age of the ship, the furnishings are somewhat worn and should be replaced. We never felt crowded or rushed and fellow passengers tended to be more polite than we have experienced in the past.
nothing could be done to improve this cruise to Caribbean and Amazon-except throwing the "whiners" in the river!!!!!!!!!! 150 word are not enough. take the cruise for yourself. yes it hot and humid. amazon basin is on equator and not covered with air conditioned dome.
I enjoyed our trip to Santarem when we went Piranha fishing. I caught white piranha which is about 3 1/2 inches big. All the ports are really nice and easy to get in and out the ports.
Exploring the Amazon was the best part of this cruise. Becoming familiar with the flora and fauna was truly once in a lifetime experience. Walking through the tropical rain forest, seeing the beautiful flowering trees and experiencing the antics of the manatees and pink dolphins was a never ending source of amazement. To listen to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in the resplendent Manaus Opera house was a truly unique musical experience, one that I will remember for a long time. Meeting the local residents along the river was a revealing moment. The smells and sounds of the great river were totally outstanding and could not have been imagined without being there.
The Prinsendam is a small ship. Maybe 800 passengers. Short distances and fewer decks to cover between locales. Easier to meet other passengers - and see them over and over again. Everything is laid back. No lines. No crowded venues. Fabulous service from the crew. And, yes, on a small ship crew and passengers get to know each other too. Entertainment was very good. Sophisticated. Classical music every evening in one lounge. Finally, for many of us, repositioning cruises are what cruising is about. We had 9 sea days out of the 16 days onboard. Paradise for me.
The Burgundian Explorer cruise (despite its somewhat perplexing name, as it went nowhere near contemporary Burgundy) was a lovely experience except for the unexplained elimination of a call at Porto in Portugal, which was one of our original motivations for scheduling the cruise, and a rather disappointing excursion to Valencia, which was more of a blow-by than a visit.
VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE NUMBER OF BROKEN WASHING AND DRYING MACHINES WHICH WERE SUPPOSEDLY FREE. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IS THE SHRUGGED SHOULDERS OF THE FRONT DESK STAFF ABOUT GETTING THEM REPAIRED. SEVERAL PEOPLE WENT THERE AND CAME BACK SWEARING. PEOPLE ARE JUST NOT RESPONSIVE.
FOOD WAS FAIR, NOT EXCELLENT OR EXCEPTIONAL. MAIN COURSES LACKED FLAVOR, BLAND MIGHT BE A GOOD WORD. DESSERTS AND APPETIZERS WERE MUCH BETTER
CABIN STAFF EXCELLENT. THE BEST.
ENTERTAINMENT OVERALL WAS GOOD. THE SHIP CAST WAS EXCELLENT. SOME OF THE ONE NIGHTERS WERE, EHH? HANGERS ON EXTENDING THEIR CAREERS.
liked stops at Bermuda, Portland England. Weather was dismal--1 day of sun: 16 cloudy, rainy, windy and unseasonably cold. Prinsendam is beautiful ship--our favorite H.A. vessel. Too bad this cruise was so rocky and cold.
We enjoyed talking to Linda who encouraged us to participate in all the activities. She is a great hostess for your programs and is most helpful. The shows were great and the cast very friendly and up-beat. The dining was excellent as was the staff. The staff that took care of the rooms was very efficient and also very helpful.
We have been with Holland America before and have met Kevin on both cruises. Obviously, your staff is encouraged to sell the excursions and tours, However, we have always been able to, with the participation of the cruise line, use information and instruction to go ashore and enjoy the sites. It is evident that Kevin did not actually go into the field and check out the instructions he was giving to the guests. Some great attention should be given to this problem. This was a great disappointment to us.
Having said this, we certainly would cruise with Holland American again. And we would recommend it to friends.
Wasn't prepared for Beds unable to convert to Double etc.
Was looking forward to participating in the piano bar. Very disappointed!
Joe in the crows nest only played rock or country western. Requested standards on three occasions. Was unsuccessful . Station band played excellent DANCE music. Stage performers Excellent, but were pre programed to planned shows Classical music (Piano & Violin) not my taste. I complained on ship. Program director left me a voice message stating I should request songs
We had a great time! We booked everything including the flight, transfers and motel through Holland America (HAL) at our cruise consultant Becca Reeves suggestion. It all went flawlessly. We flew on Delta out of Ft Lauderdale, Florida to Rome Italy via Atlanta Georgia. The flight from Atlanta to Rome was fairly pleasant for a long flight. They served a complimentary meal and drinks including wine and beer. The food was surprisingly good. They also had complimentary movies as well. When we arrived in Rome a HAL representative was waiting for us in the terminal and instructed where to go and after retrieving our baggage took us to our shuttle to the motel. We encountered several people that had booked with a different cruise line wandering around lost looking for directions. They should have booked with HAL! The shuttle took us directly to the motel as they had a shuttle that went directly to our motel, not one that hit several motels. The accommodations at the Sheraton were top notch. Great restaurant in the motel too. HAL was there at the motel to gives directions for the shuttle service to the cruise port too.
Once we arrived at the port, boarding onto the Prinsendam was quick and smooth. Our ships cabin was really great too. It even had a walk in closet. Becca got us a great upgrade at no additional cost to us. She is great!!!! The food onboard was absolutely fantastic as were the shows.were awesome as well. The ship is an older ship that was starting to show it's age but it was well maintained and clean. The ports of call were fun too. We choose some fun HAL excursions and had a great time on everyone of them. I would recommend this cruise to anyone.
We are looking forward to our next cruise!!
The ports of call, with exception of Sinop and Trabzon were nice and interesting.
Istanbul and Canakkale, were superb.
Now, the vessel, as usual, (I had the same issue in 2011 with the same ship) all the public areas, show room, dinning room, explorers lounge, etc. were kept at 55 or 60 degrees, I know because I have an app in my i-phone that reads the temperature in a room. 80% of the passengers, including me, inside the ship, we were wearing coats and sweaters.
I talked to Captain Roberts, but did not work.
Now in the Lido restaurant, very unusual, they have very rude personal this time.
The locations offered by this cruise is why we book this particular cruise. The size of the ship allowed us to go to gdanse poland and cruise the KEIL canal
The ship is well maintained but showing it's age. The dining room was better than expected with a nice selection and tastefully prepared and presented dinners. The ports were more than we hoped for, Scotland was memorable, stark and beautiful, many castles and ruins in multiple stops, a delightful afternoon tea, Exciting Edinburgh and Dublin and a disappointing scenic railroad excursion.
All in all, a memorable cruise.
I highly recommend visiting/cruising Norway, particularly the fjords, but not necessarily with Holland America. This was our 3d. cruise with HA and the service, accommodations, food and particularly the excursions were very pricey and or disappointing.
The fjords, the snow capped mountains, the frequent waterfalls are incredible and their beauty can hardly be captured with the camera - unfortunately I don't have the words to properly describe them, so you just have to see it for yourselves. The 24hr. sunlight in the arctic circle is somewhat disconcerting, but luckily it only last part of the cruise.
