Sail Date: June 01, 2007 Ship: Pride of Hawaii Cabin Type: Suite Traveled As: Family (older children) Reviewed: 10 years ago
We just returned from cruise on Pride of Hawaii. New ship was dirty - had to clean my own room (after the staff)the first 3 days. Could not get reservations before 9 PM or not at all. Food and service was poor; staff didn't care. Management recommended the buffet if you had complaints. Many passengers blamed it on American crew, but our hotel chains are American run to perfection. It had to be poor management. Concierge was useless and hid the whole cruise. Photographer blocked your exit off the ship the first couple days (of course photos were $20 a piece). After day 4 he stopped doing that since people were so miserable. We met only one person who enjoyed the cruise. He stayed on the 5th level with the NCL crew and had fun. The rest of people we met were counting the days and hours to get off. No apology from NCL despite several complaints. Only excellent service was the spa, which helped relax some of the tension. We had to go to a resort after the cruise to unwind.
Food and Dining

Half the dining rooms have extra fees, but don't expect better food or service (if you can get into them). Menues primarily meat and starch - couldn't get vegetables even after requested. Hard to get a cup of coffee in the morning. Service was poor; they didn't deserve the automatic $10 pp fee added to your daily bill. Expect to add about $350 per couple for food/tip to your ship bill. This doesn't include beverages or other extras. Oh yeah, soda and water is extra. Also, if you choose the $56 weekly charge for non-alcohol beverages, it doesn't include if you order them to your room. that is extra also.

We attended 2 evening functions that didn't conflict with dinner. Both I wouldn't pay to see. We left early on second one - couldn't take it. There was nothing to do late night on the ship. The last day leaves Kaui at 2 PM. Everything is centered around the pool area - which is a zoo. I went back to my balcony to read, but someone was smoking, so I had to retreat inside. 3 available channels to watch on TV. Movie rental was $10. Boring!!!!

Teen dance was a joke. None of the kids we met went back. Arcade had lousy games; most were broken. Pools were so packed with little kids since there was nothing else for them to do on the ship. Most teens hung out in the stairways because of nothing to do.
Service and Staff

Staff was useless, nor were they trained. It was hard on the staff with so many unhappy people that it was understandable why they would not make eye contact. Most servers mentioned they couldn't wait until their contract was up to leave NCL. Employees who seated diners were rude at all of the restaurants.

Public areas seemed to be cleaned once a day. Surprised at the condition of the ship for being only 1 year old. However, I don't think it is cleaned very well since they arrive back from one cruise Monday morning, passengers have until 10:30 to debark, then the next group starts to board at 1:00 (LESS THAN 2 HOURS LATER!!) When do they shampoo carpets? Loved the hand-cleansing system. Surprised they didn't offer water throughout the ship. Felt very dehydrated the whole week.
Cabin / Stateroom

Rooms ok. decorated like a cheap Vegas hotel. Did not receive any of the amentities that were suppose to come with a suite - even after we made a 2nd request on day 2.
