Hawaii was Beautiful

Sail Date: October 01, 2006

Reviewed: 10 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Balcony

While the ship was new and beautiful, the staff appeared to be mostly college students 'learning the ropes of cruising". They were not very attentive and sometimes looked annoyed if you asked them to clear a table so you could sit at it. Also, for some reason, somebody thought it was a good not to have trays in the buffet dining room; therefore, you have to juggle plates of food along with liquid beverages (juice and coffee in the morning), cutlery and napkins while trying to find somewhere to sit. The staterooms were nicely appointed - we had a mini-suite which was more than adequate for 2 people. The bathroom was larger than usual on ships. The only criticism is that there are only two electrical outlets (right next to each other over the desk) in the entire room. The one in the bathroom is labeled "for razor only". The pool area was clean and well kept, and the common areas were well maintained. As for the Free-style dining - it just doesn't work. If you don't make your reservations for the entire week on the first day, you will most likely be locked out of the main dining areas. Reservations are made for 2 hour increments so if you want to eat at 6:30 they won't give you a table if they have a reservation for 8:00 because they are afraid you won't be out in time for the "reserved" guest. Tables sit empty for 1-1/2 hours so as to accommodate a reservation. Very bad system.

Pros: Itinerary - Brand New Clean Ship

Cons: Free-Style Dining was a Horror

Recommends Pride of Hawaii (RETIRED)? Yes!

Ship Quality
While very large, it is easy to navigate - just follow the dolphins - they always swim toward the front. Clean and polished and beautifully decorated.
Food and Dining
Food presentation was good but the quality overall was only average. The Asian restaurant is excellent, as is the steakhouse. We found the menus to be very limited in selection and we sometimes found it hard to find something we wanted to eat. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly and accommodating.
Service and Staff
A mixed bag - some were excellent and went "above and beyond" while others appeard bothered if you asked them to do their job.
Entertainment
We did not participate in many of the on-board activities other than the shows in the evening. The comedian and illusionist were very good; the production shows were just okay.
Cabin / Stateroom
Mini-Suite with balcony - very nice. Nicely decorated. Plenty of storage. Well maintained.
