Ship: Norwegian Sun
Cabin Type: Balcony
Traveled As: Couple

Layout of buffet, duration of buffet and quality (not hot when it should have been, also hamburgers precooked, thick with very large thick buns and no taste). Best was breakfast but bacon, sausage, and hash were cold. Generally food in sit-down dining was not anything special. Cruise did not go to St. Thomas or St. Martin due to starboard engine clutch failure on 2nd day of 7 day cruise. NCL substituted Samana Dominican Republic and their island. Offered $100 per cabin on board credit. Very poorly communicated and seen as an insult by most of the many passengers expressed at a meeting with the ship's officiers. Result then offered by NCL corporate was the addition of a bunch of throwaways such as free photos (they would have been thrown away since not many had been purchased at outlandish prices), free wine at dinner (which they did not announce to the general population), free rum drinks (same as wine), free use of their slide on the island (no one was using it anyway and the average age of the passengers was in the high 60's.) They also offered 30% off the next cruise on NCL (from the retail price list, not off a discounted cruise). Having worked in Customer Service, this was poorly handled, and the direct impact to NCL will be a very poor rating, negative referrals, and a lot of long term collateral damage. Passengers went on this cruise to go to St. Thomas and St. Martin, not to visit a poor town in the Dominican Republic and the NCL beach. We would not have booked this cruise if those were the listed destinations. The general feeling of the very large crowd at the meetings (multiple) was that at least a 30% refund (not a credit toward a future cruise within a year) was warranted since the two primary ports of three did not occur (we did get to Nassau the first day). NCL saved significant fuel costs and did not deliver the expected cruise destinations.

Food and Dining

Food was mostly cold, like it was taken out of the refrigeration, and put on the serving buffet steam tables (the Garden Cafe) just as they opened the restaurant, leaving no time for it to reheat. Hamburgers were thick, precooked and laid in trays on edge, generally luke warm at best and the buns were very thick doughy. Hotdogs were barely warm on the outside, let alone in the center. Freshly grilled hamburgers were said to be had at the Grille, although there was not such place, instead they did have the same hamburgers offered at the Great Outdoors area, precooked and exactly the same at the Garden Cafe. Although it was touted at a continuous buffet, the buffet actually closed around 10:30 and opened at 12:00 to 2:30, then closed until 5:30p.m. The pizza was not good in that area, thin, no sauce, little cheese. Hot sandwiches consisted of grilled Ruebens, but they were precooked and laid out on a tray, cold by the time they were served and not well prepared

Ship Quality

Layout of the buffet area (the Garden Cafe) was such that thru traffic from fore to aft of the ship had to pass through the same area as the line for the ice cream and the buffet especially at dinner as the other side of the ship was closed off during the evening buffet. This caused considerable dodging around others to get to through this area for any purpose. The buffet layout was poor, with no logic to the food order (desserts came first, then entrees, then salads, then back to different entrees, then fruits, then stir fry.) This again caused people to have to wait to get to items and meanwhile what little heat was in the food on the dish was pretty well gone by the time you sat down.

Ship starboard engine clutch failed just after leaving Nassau, ship diverted to Dominican Republic (Samana, a poor village) and then to NCL's island (passengers average age was high 60's and not really interested in going to the beach).

Never got there, same as St. Thomas comments.

Pros: Entertainment was good

Cons: Ship food was generally cold, unless in a specialty restaurant, ship starboard engine propulsion failed, cruise was aborted, did not visit St. Thomas or St. Martin, went instead to NCL beach and Samana Dominican Republic. NCL offered only $100 and a bunch of throwaway stuff per cabin.

Recommends Norwegian Sun? No.
