Great experience for first-time cruisers!

My husband and I chose to celebrate our anniversary by taking a cruise for the first time.  We chose NCL for the price and the itinerary.  We were very pleased with our choice.  The best thing about this cruise was the food.  It was excellent!  We ate at the buffet every morning for breakfast.  I did not care for the buffet for lunch but really enjoyed the made-to-order pasta bar at Il Adagio during lunchtime.  This restaurant costs extra at dinnertime, but is free for lunch.  At dinner, we ate at Crossings and Palace, each of the main dining rooms that are included in the price of the cruise.  Both were excellent - excellent service and food!  We also ate one night at Le Bistro, one of the premium restaurants for which there is an additional charge.  As expected, it was superb.

We also enjoyed the many many onboard activities and entertainment every evening.  At home, we generally go to bed early, but on board we were up every night past midnight because there was so much to see & do!  The game shows, The Newlywed Game and the Perfect Couple Game, were hilarious!  We enjoyed listening to salsa music by Duo Caribe.  We enjoyed the comic Andrew Kennedy but felt that sometimes his material seemed thin.

Our stateroom was very nice.  We had an oceanview and, although there was not a lot of extra room, we had sufficient room to put all of our clothes & toiletries away.  The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept like babies every night!

Of the ports of call, we enjoyed Freeport and Great Stirrup Cay the most.  From Freeport we went on a snorkeling excursion booked through the cruise line.  We thought it was well worth the money.  Afterwards, we hung out in Port Lucaya, a town on the island that we had visited previously and really enjoy.  Great Stirrup Cay, NCL's private island, was really enjoyable.  It actually turned out to be our least expensive day since we chose not to drink alcohol nor rent any rafts or snorkel gear.  There were plenty of beach chairs and shade, the barbecue lunch that is provided was perfect for the setting, and the beautiful sand and water were free!

Overall, we would highly recommend a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise to anyone, especially first-time cruisers!

Ship Quality
Very well maintained.
Food and Dining
The food at the two main dining rooms, Crossings and Palace, was excellent!
Service and Staff
Joel, the cruise director, was a lot of fun!
Entertainment
Really enjoyed the musicians (especially Duo Caribe) and the game shows.
Destinations and Excursions
Be careful of Nassau - we paid $40 for a horse & buggy ride that lasted maybe 15 minutes! Complete ripoff!
Cabin / Stateroom
Our bed was excellent - great night sleep every night. Not a lot of walking-around room, but plenty of storage for clothes and toiletries. Our shower did not drain properly and flooded our bathroom. We had to notify our steward a couple of times before it was cleared out but after that it worked just fine.
Miami, Florida
Freeport, Grand Bahama Island
Snorkeling. Hang out in Port Lucaya - much more picturesque than Freeport.
Nassau, Bahamas
Watch out for the horse & buggy rides. If you go on one, ask them how long the ride is and don't let them cheat you!
Great Stirrup Cay (Cruiseline Private Island), Bahamas
Beautiful! I was worried about there being enough beach chairs or shade, but there was plenty.

Tip

At the buffet, there are two and sometimes three lines for food, all of them with the same offerings. If there is a long line at the first line by the main door, go around and go to one of the other lines toward the back. Also, try Il Adagio for lunch. It is excellent!
