Interesting Cruise

Sail Date: December 01, 2007

Reviewed: 8 years ago

Room Type: Oceanview

An older ship that would benefit from a good wipe-down. My family and a friend took two cabins on the Dec. 22 Christmas cruise. Bad start when we were three hours late boarding due to ship's late arrival because of weather, Port of Charleston is not well-eqippped to handle large numbers of passengers in such circumstances. Once aboard, things were better, for a while.
We wanted a smaller ship after sailing on Princess and RCL megaships. That we got. We knew the ship was old. It was also dumpy. We were amazed how many loose pieces of moulding and trim could have been repaired with a screw or some glue. It was never done. Loose tile which slipped out of place constantly in our bathroom floor was never fixed (and had probably been that way for years).
Other Bad points: Occasionally rude employees in the casino. (Example: A black jack table was set up on the family pool deck. I witnessed a pit boss--a tall guy from Romania--yell at a passenger for allowing his son to touch the table. I've never seen that sort of thing on any other cruise ship. If they don't want children near the gambling tables, don't set them up on a family pool deck where there are a lot of kids!) Staff at the Cruise Info Desk (Information Central on a cruise ship)generally seemed to have a poor command of English. They semed to have memorized answers to certain categories of questions and these answers frequently had little relationship to the specific question asked. And they could get testy when pressed on specifics. A lot of frustration there.
Our biggest disappointment was just the overall lower quality of expereience on the Majesty. We expected the sort of royal treatment we experienced with Princess and RCL. It just wasn' there. If we had known in advance that we were not in for a Ritz-Carlton cruise, but more of a side-of-the-road motel cruise, we wouldn't have been as disappointed.
Good Points: The Four Seasons dining room (average food, but superb service and presentation) and the entertainment staff and cruise director (Soozy from Canada). Althought the entertainment facilities very limiting, the staff did their best!
Would we recommend this cruise? It depends. If you're willing to accept lower level of service and a less-than-pristene ship in exchange for a loweer cost and an interesting port of departure, go for it. If you are a cruiser who saves for years for the royal treatment, skip this ship.
One final note. Our family friend, who had never ben on a cruise before, thought it was great!

Pros: Entertainment Staff, Four Seasons Dining Room

Cons: Occasu\ionally poorly trained staff, poor ship upkeep in certain areas

Recommends Norwegian Majesty (RETIRED)? No.
