NCL Rocks!

Sail Date: October 28, 2012

Reviewed: 4 years ago

Traveled As: Family (young children)

Room Type: Balcony

The ship was clean and well kept. We sailed out of NY 2 hours before they closed the port (due to Sandy) and we sailed south between the hurricaner and the coast. The ship handled the 25 - 30 ft seas and hurricane force winds much better than expected. Movement on board was not excessive and there was really no great discomforts from the storm. A well seasoned captain and crew handled the weather excellently.

Pros: The ship and the crew were tops

Cons: Some of the food in the main dining rooms and buffet was a tad heavy on the salt

Recommends Norwegian Jewel? Yes!

Ship Quality
This is one of my favourite sizes (~2000 passengers\, 1100 crew) for a ship. Not as large as the new ones (too large in my opinion at 4000+ passengers).
The ship is well laid out and appointed and always clean and well maintained. There were several mobility challenged people on board having no problems moving about the ship in wheelchairs or on scooters.
Food and Dining
The Jewel has a great variety of dining and entertainment options and best of all the main dining rooms go from 17:30 - 22:00 and you go when you want to\, not when you are told. The food was all excellent with a very wide variety available. The buffet had oriental selections and curry selections daily as well as a great variety of other things. They also offered several outdoor barbeques by the pool. Our only complaint was that several of the dishes were prepared with a heavy hand when it came to added salt but other than that the variety flavours and preperations were great. I have several cuts of different steaks on board and all were prepared exactly as requested (medium rare). They all arrived done to perfection and always piping hot.
Cabin / Stateroom
The staterooms were excellent. Clean and with room for the three of us and or belongings. We were in a midship mini suite which is just a basic balconey with a few extra feet on the balconey and in the bathroom so they can fit in a tub. There was one minor problem which was a trickle leak at the bottom of the faucet on the bathroom sink. We reported it to our stewart and it was called in immediately and repaired within the hour.
Service and Staff
Top of the line. All staff were excellent\, friendly and helpful\, all the time.
Entertainment
In a word ...... Great!
Lots of variety and all of it good.. There were also a number of activities geared to families which is wonderful.
Children's Programs
The staff and programs in the youth area were sensational. My 12 year old daughter would run out of our cabin at 10 am and I would only see her when I had to drag her out of there to get some lunch and at 10 pm when I had to drag her out of there to eat some dinner and retire for the night.
