Review summary

The Norwegian Getaway is a nice fairly new ship.  Its clean and rooms are nice.  The food was good however I wish there was more of a selection at the salad bar at the buffet.  They could have expanded their items in this area as alot of people prefer not to eat as much during lunch.

My one misgiving is the daily activities offered on the ship.  My entire family found us to be quite board.  There were not many offerings throughout the sea days to do much.  Much time went by searching for something to do.  It became fustrating.

The personnel on the ship was excellent.   The ports of call were nice.  Overall a good experience but would I go back on a Norwegian ship no.  RCC offers so much more variety in entertainment and daily activities.

Got to thinking more about the issue of sea day activities.  RCC did a really nice job of planning the sea day activities for the transatlantic we just took a few weeks ago.  One of the real highlights of which was the Master Sea Chef competition. This is similar to what you see on FoodNetwork or similar. Seven non-chef crew members were selected to compete. On each sea day, the Centrum was staged for this event. Each chef had a work table, a container full of required ingredients, a pantry/larder from which to select optional ingredients, and about 20 minutes to prepare their dish.  Three top-tier C&A guests were selected to serve as judges. The cruise director was MC and the head chef was also involved.  Each day, one of the chefs was eliminated until it was down to two.  The last sea day was the final competition.

It was a great way to get a lot of people involved in the experience and the crew members who competed really appeared to enjoy themselves too.  Some of the competitors included the Staff Captain, the Food & Beverage manager, the Guest Relations Manager, the Hotel manager, and someone from engineering.

This type of event required a lot of planning and some out of the box thinking but it was great fun.  Guests participated as observers and rooted on their favorite crew member. Everyone enjoyed themselves but you really had to get a seat early if you wanted to see anything.

I have found that a cruise depends more on the ship then the cruise line.   I have had 2 bad cruises on NCL Star but had a great cruise on the NCL Pearl.  NCL is bottom of the list for me,   but I would go on the Pearl again,  doubt I'd go on the Star again.

I have had great trips on the Carnival Imagination and a so-so trip on the Carnival Glory.  The Glory is bigger, newer and nicer but the service and staff were just so much better on the Imagination.

Thank you for leaving this review.  I appreciate that you compared your RCC experience as that helps provide some perspective.  I was surprised that there was not a lot to do on sea days... I thought that was the point of these mega-ships... to have lots of options. Hope your next cruise experience is better, overall.
