Rest, Relaxation & Food by JudithL5

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Large Group

We have cruised with Norwegian several times but this was our first trip on thr GEM. WE were delighted as usual with all aspects of the ship. After we had booked, My husband had his leg amputated and wears a prosthesis. We attempted to change our reservation to a Handicap Room, but there was no availibility. The staff we delt with were able to provide us with the extra things we needed and our cabin steward, Jonathon was very accomadating. We had all of our meals in the Grand Pacific, Blue Lagoon or speciality restaurants and were delighted. The ship is beautifully appointed and the upkeep is great. what a delight to live in such special surroundings for a week.

2012 cruise by DebraM2

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

We enjoyed the cruise, but were quite taken back by the lack of parental supervision. Our children are adult teens - never would we let them run around like the kids on this cruise. We witnessed children just taking plates of food and never eating more than one bite from them. We even saw a 3 and 4 year old playing shuffleboard without a parent present......not the cruiseline fault, but next time we will definitely research to find a more adult friendly atmosphere - we felt our rights to enjoy quiet time were overruled by the kids

First Cruise Ever! (not the last) by TeamAJ

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Great introduction to cruising with NCL.  Freestyle setup was attractive as we did not want the standard or stuffier pre-seating dress up etc experience.  As we boarded we were greeted with a poolside Barbecue of chicken potatoes and veg.  Unseasonable warmth allowed for jeans and t shirts while walking the ship and happily discovering our 2nd home Mandara Spa.  Turns out the Gem is one of the few ships if not the only one to do the outdoor barbecue which is a really nice departure from dining rooms as it spreads out the crowds.  Picked up spa passes in the first hour and a cold Blue Moon to settle in.  Fellipe was our cabin steward and has set the bar for all who follow.  Fantastic, friendly, service oriented at every turn of the ship.  Being our first cruise we didn't see the value of the dining option until after we went to Cagney's and maybe Le Bistro for our special nights out to eat and decided yes, we want that all the time going forward.  totally worth it.  Made the rookie mistake of getting off at Florida for cocoa beach and yep, its Florida.  Back on the boat.  Got off an Nassau and didn't have a plan so we just wandered around a little and quickly figured out this was NOT the move and wandered back to port to purchase a hand rolled cigar to enjoy in the cigar bar aboard the Gem later.  Excellent and we met up with a couple from Holland who was pleasant to chat with for an hour while we enjoyed our smokes.  Stirrup Cay is a nice island spot, not much to look at in 2012 when it was still being built up but we are going back this year Dec 2016 and hear it is beautiful and finished now.  Good water and beachfront, cute straw market but if you walk you can find a quiet spot for chilling out.  Great 1st impression, well done NCL

For a first time cruiser like myself you really don't know what to expect. This whole experience blew me away! The entertainment was amazing, the food was solid and if you really want to be treated like a celebrity do yourself a favor and book a cruise!

Great Cruise but... by GregT1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

the ship was very nice with the acceptions below: - There was a lot of smoking on the ship, especially in the casino and apparently on the balconies that drifted to our balcony and into our room, restricting my use of both. - The main deck with the swimming pools was very slippery while a non-slip surface would have made it much safer. - The food descriptions in the buffet area could have been more specific to include ingredients especially those that are common allergens for some people like lemon, lime, orange, peppers, etc. There were only a few signs saying certain items may contain nuts or been prepared on equipment that may have been exposed to nuts - but not which nuts specifically. - The lines for embarking and disembarking were very long. - The instructions upon disembarking in NY for getting picked up were very unhelpful. They herded us to street level, but neglected to tell us there was no pickup on the street level with no obvious way to get to the upper level where you could get picked up, no signs, just angry security who assumed you knew the procedures without them having to tell us.

I led this group cruise... by tecknicole

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

I led this group cruise to nowhere.. my group consisted of 14 people. I have been on three nowhere cruises in the past so I know it's a great party atmosphere. Checking in this time, though, was chaotic. There were two NCL ships at port this time allowing guests on at the same time. It was a crazy large crowd with lots of lines but being my companion and I are GOLD with NCL, we only waited in one short line. Unfortunately, the rest of my group had to wait a while to board. After getting on board, we went to the pool deck as it was a warm January day! Party was in full swing with lots of great drinks and good food. The buffet, as usual, was jam packed so be sure you find a buffet on the pool or the back of the ship as well. There is also additional seating in the Italian restaurants for breakfast and lunch. In addition to all that, they had a pool side BBQ at 3:45pm. We stopped at our cabin (interior.. who cares to sleep) I would have liked ice or a fridge but the fridge was locked so I asked for ice and they came within 10 minutes. Luggage away- time to play! The day was full of dancing by the pool, then an excellent dinner at Tequila which is a specialty restaurant that serves Mexican food. The fajitas are amazing and the best I ever had. They also make an excellent premium margarita. After dinner, we went to Karaoke (my personal favorite activity) but you can also catch a show, gamble, etc. Then we had two venues to choose from for dancing the night away.. toga party in Bliss lounge and a phenominal DJ in Spinnaker lounge where we danced until 2am! Embarkation, breakfast buffet again, completely over crowded and then people waiting in lines to exit the ship. We relaxed and waited a bit then used our VIP gold status to go to the head of the line. Cruise with NCL for a while and you can become gold too. It was an awesome evening and I can't wait to do it again! Want to join me? www.facebook.com/livealil

Perfect! by 2Harrigans

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Our first cruise could not have been better! The perfect ship, the gem! We had an inside room since we had no idea if we would be seasick. As I know now the room really was basic but to us it was perfect. The bed comfortable, the room big enough and our steward was wonderful. He made towel animals each night and really wanted to please us so he often would make 2! We bought the spa passes and were so thankful! This was pure relaxation! The restaurants were very good, and yes we did the specialty restaurants several times when we wanted to splurge. We were totally sold on Norwegian from the first night!

Norwegian Gem by CruiseMan3000

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Singles/Friends

Norwegian gem is nothing less than her name boasts. She sails with a four-lane bowling alley*, a rock-climbing wall, 6 hot tubs and the hahalarious Second City ComedyTroupe. The preceding and more internal finds aboard this innovative Freestyle Cruisin; vessel make her not just a rare gem, but a genuine jewel gracing the high seas. Like other ships in the NCL fleet, Norwegian gem sails with a host of dining options--15 to be exact. Of those 15, 5 do not require anadditionalcover charge--with the exception of room service; which does between the hours of 12:00am - 5:00am. Accompanying the many eateries on-aboard are 10 unique bars throughout the ship. There's even a two-story high visual screen plastered smack-dab in the middle of the atrium--perfect for watching sporting events (e.g., NFL games) and classic movies, or playing Nintendo Wii. The NCL world-famous White Hot Party is ah-mazing! It was truly the bomb diggity featuring everything these high-seas parties are known to have: foam, bubbles, icesculptures, angel wings, glow sticks, and the ocean's most vivacious cruise crew! If you've never experienced a White Hot Party with NCL, you're definitely missing the ice ice, baby! Be sure to pack your white for this iconic event... oh, and book a cruise with Norwegian (they're the only ones who boogie while it's nice, white, and hot). And if you want to keep that dance floor swag alive until the wee hours of the morning, be sure to swing into the Bliss Ultra Lounge and you'll meet some of the high seas' hottest DJs bustin the tunes that'll keep you in the groove! She has one of the best gyms afloat--Body Waves Fitness Center--where I spent most of my evenings. The classes offered on-board are may have you in pain, but your body feeling the muscle gain. If you stay on your toes, you can get into the some of the free classes and seminars the trainers teach! Norwegian Gem calls New York, New York home--docking at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal all year round--sailing up and down the East Coast leaving no wave unsailed on the Atlantic. She peaks her bow into the waters of the Bahamas, Florida, the Eastern Caribbean, Canada/New England, and in the middle of nowhere--sailing her signature dinner and dance cruises./span/div I had the time of my life aboard the Norwegian Gam and give her a 4.4 out of a possible 5 waves on the cruisetacular sailing scale. She's NCL's "it" girl, one of Manhattan's Freestyle Cruising attractions, and the best excuse for your next holiday getaway. Be sure to check out all this beautiful ship has to offer, and you too will realize why your jewelry collection has't been made complete--you're missing this smooth sailing gem. Your ships await, and it may be Norwegian Gem.

Had Great Time by LeeW1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

The ship was recently renovated so the overall it felt new. The rooms were nice and the having a balcony was great. We loved having the balcony. It's easy to get around and find your way to the restaurants, stores, and theater. The staff is great and super friendly but remember some can be a bit grumpy because they've been working 7 days straight...so be nice to them and they will be nice to you.
