Excursion in Port Canaveral by Bushka

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

Paid $149 per person (4 people) to go to Universal Studios. By the time the ship docked in Port Canaveral and we got on the bus to Universal we arrived there about 1:45 p.m. We had to be back on the bus by 8. The lines were long, we were able to get on 5 or 6 attractions at the most. To ask people to pay $149 per person for this excursion was outrageous. You live and learn and we will never do that again. 1/2 that price would have been adequate.

Semi-decent cruise by smugsy1122

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (young children)

The Gem is a great ship to cruise on. It is huge\, but smartly laid out... once you figure out where everything is. We were very fortunate to travel in a penthouse and therefore had extra perks of priority embarkation and disembarkation. This was a very welcome advantage. The staff was friendly\, yet difficult to understand. Freestyle dining is a welcome change from scheduled dinner sittings.

Let's do it again!! by marcocarrera

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (young children)

There is not a minute of boredom aboard the Gem! From the moment you set foot on the ship to the moment you get off you literally have plenty of options like the pool, fitness center, rock climbing wall, sports court, clubs and lounges etc, etc, etc. My Family and I were first time cruisers and we are so hooked now that as our cruise director Kyle advised we are suffering from cruise-withdrawal syndrome. We stayed at an ocean view room that was comfortable for me my wife and our 7 yr old son. The service is top of the line and full of pleasant surprises, Thank you Avelino, you're the man. We are so coming back next summer or maybe sooner.

Norwegian Gem July 20, 2013 by Smithers35321

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

Having sailed on the Epic and Breakaway I knew the Gem would slightly older and not as spectacular. With that in mind I was pleased with the overall cruise experience. Likes: - Mini suite stateroom was great. If you can swing Haven accomodations do it. We have before and its tough going back! - Overall staff were very gracious and helpful. No complaints there. - Wife loved the Spa and especially the Thermal Room (upcharge of $139/week). If it's peace and serenity you crave this is your ticket. - Love FreeStyle dining. The variety and even the process of jockeying for reservations is kind of fun. One should anticipate these charges in advance if you plan to take advantage of specialty dining. If not the main formal dining room is great anyways (Grand Pacific). - The Grand Pacific dining room. Had fantastic meals and service here breakfast, lunch and dinner. I strongly recommend this over the other included more casual dining options (Garden Cafe and Magenta- see below) -Entertainment overall was superb. The comedy shows and others were all fantastic. Norwegian has far fewer of the typical musical productions that I persoanlly do not care for. Dislikes: - The Garden Cafe. This is the buffet restaurant common to most all cruise ships. It did not meet my expecations. The traffic flow was poor and crowded. It could have been cleaner. The floors were slippery and curiously wet always. I quickly figured out a much better and vastly more pleasant breakfast and lunch could be had in Grand Pacific. -Magenta dining room. We had a very poor first night meal here- food, service and atmosphere. We went there because they allow shorts and we were too lazy to dress up. It seems the quality of this restaurant is less then all others. Put some pants on and go to Grand Pacific. - Running track, like on many cruise ships, runs through high traffic areas and not ideal. Use the treadmills or run carefully. Overall...we had a blast and were happy.

CRUISE FROM NOT REAL HAPPY LAND by rforrestal1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

RUDE UNCONTROLLED PASSENGER AREAS BATHROOM AREA TO SMALL POOL AREA MUCH TO SMALL ALA CARTE ACTIVITIES AND FOODS MAKE CRUISE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. SOCIAL SEPARATION/DISCRIMINATION I FOUND OFFENSIVE. CERTAIN CABIN TYPES COULD EAT AT CAGNEY'S MORNING\, NOON AND NIGHT. WE STRUGGLED FOR LATE NIGHT RESERVATIONS. OFF LOADING THE SHIP NEEDS CLEARER CONTROL \, MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION. ENTERTAINMENT FOT THE MOST PART WAS COLLGE LEVEL/OFF KEY\, OFF NOTE\, AND OUT OF TIME DANCES. 2 GOOD VOICES

NCL all the way by belles7487

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We were on the Norwegian GEM and it was FANTASTIC! The ship is very well maintained and clean, which is of great importance. The entire staff were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. When we got to Great Stirrup Cay the weather was horrible, severe thunder storm, but the crew added a bunch of activities for the day so no-one was bored. Although there are a lot of dining options that are included, we also ate at Moderno which is one of several specialty restaurants on board for an additional small charge per person.

Nothing free about this freestyle Cruise by kimberlykn

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

When we entered the Norwegian Gem, we first stopped at the Pacific Dining room for lunch, which turned out to be a big disappointment. I ordered an olive 'tartar' which turned out to be a dip with half a pita cut into 4 triangles and as a main course, the steak with fries, the steak had no flavor (no seasoning added) and the fries were covered in steak grease, absolutely disgusting (I hate to say this about food, but there was no other way of describing it). My husband had a Fettuccine Alfredo pasta, again with no seasoning, and to his surprise, no cheese! It was only heavy cream with no taste! However, he is forgiving, as he is Italian and doesn't expect great pasta outside of Italy. Then we finally arrived to our tiny stateroom. I must say I expected it to be small from the reviews of other travelers, and that didn't really bother me as I figured I would not spend much time in my stateroom. I was wrong. The bathroom made a loud blowing noise, which made it difficult to sleep, and the water pressure of the sink was very low, making it difficult to wash. Also, my husband didnt receive his luggage until the evening, so we couldnt change our clothes. We then went out to check out the ship. We were curious about the pools and seeing where we would be having fun for the rest of the week. We found the first pool, which was for children, and the second and as it turns out, the ONLY pool for adults. It had children in it who were splashing adults and swimming in a dangerously deep pool with no lifeguards. Not a very nice situation, but we continued exploring and looking for the other pools that most cruise ships have. We didnt find any, because there was only 1 pool on the entire ship, 1 pool for over 3000 guests! My husband and I tried not to let this bother us, and went out to explore the ship. We were very excited, as this was our wedding anniversary gift and we hadn't been on a cruise since 2005 where we first met each other. We saved up the
