A great value

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Balcony

The ship definitely needed some refreshing\, but overall the ship was still in good shape. The food was not as impressive as I remembered other NCL ships to be. The entertainment was pretty mediocre. The best part was the partnership with Second City and their performance. There didn't seem to be as much activities planned on board knowing this was a two day at sea cruise. Must have to do with budget cuts or the money allocated to the partnership with Nickelodeon. It was funny running into the Nickelodeon characters as I was returning to my stateroom. The Spa on board was heavenly!

Pros: Mandara Spa\, Itinerary

Cons: Impact of budget cuts

Recommends Norwegian Gem? Yes!

Ship Quality
Definitely needs a refresh as some of the chairs in the lounges/bar area looked quite weathered.
Food and Dining
The buffet area on this ship was very small comparatively speaking. There did not seem to be as many options as I remember other ships to have. It really pushed you to go to the main dining rooms instead.
Cabin / Stateroom
As with any ship\, the staterooms for the money paid is always small. But it's not like you're supposed to hang out there all day. Overall comfortable\, clean\, and pleasant to the eye. Really like the showers with a door instead of a curtain.
Service and Staff
The staff was awesome! They were extremely friendly and helpful as can be. The nice part about the buffet staff was that they were ready to help out those passengers carrying a cane or in a wheelchair by patiently walking to the stations to get their food and get them seated. Nice touch.
Variety of the entertainment was good\, but not interesting to all parties. Maybe geared more to the I'll call them the \"wiser\" crowd. Again\, Second City acts were the best part.
