The buffet food in the Garden Cafe was horrible--usually cold (when it was supposed to be hot)\, soggy and bland\, and not at all tasty. We nicknamed it the trough. The entertainment was pretty lousy--the lounge and stage singers could not carry a tune; the dancers lacked rhythm and grace. Why did the cruise director don a huge\, wild Afro wig on the TV channel while making announcements? That seemed quite unprofessional\, inappropriate and crass. The boat was overcrowded; there was a sign at the guest services desk not to ask for a change in cabins. My cabin was puny and noisy and reeked of smoke (likely from the nearby crew quarters on the 5th level)\, and the cleaning and restocking of supplies (such as toilet paper)for my cabin was poorly executed. One day the steward even forgot to clean my room. That night I had to call and complain\, to get housekeeping to clean the room. Staffing was inadequate--on Thursday morning there were tables at the Greater Outdoors that went unattended and uncleaned while people searched for tables to sit. There was no silverware either at the tables that morning for breakfast. And spoons were never a part of the settings. One had to go and search for spoons. Where was security? Passengers openly smoked in non-designated areas--annoying us non-smokers; children were everywhere--sitting on and blocking stairways\, and crowding and playing--pushing buttons on the elevators; people (against the rules) videotaped--using their cell phones--the stage performances; and children--i.e. unruly preteens--against the rules--filled the seats in the front rows of the theater--and openly and constantly interrupted the performers. The \"entertainment\" was truly lousy\, save for the Gem jazz band and the comic\, who was funny. But he was repeatedly heckled by kids in the front rows. The hypnotist act (performance) seemed fake\, phony\, and fraudulent. The lounge singers could not sing; and the assistant cruise director \"Dizzy Lizzie\" had the best

Food and Dining

Hot food was often not hot; cold corn on the cob; cold hamburgers; cold potatoes. The decor of the restaurants leaves much to be desired.

With two exceptions--the comic\, and the Norwegian Gem band-- the entertainment was awful. The hypnotist was a joke and not credible; the lounge and singers in the theater could not sing; the dancers lacked rhythm. The organized \"games\" and contests on ship were sexist and the announcements of events and the extracurricular activities too frequent. The TV is tiny and the channels obscure and mostly ship channels for promotions and sales.

Children's Programs

3 out of 5
Little children have a playroom...but they paraded the tykes around ship as pirates--singing aloud (not serenading passengers. Teens entertained themselves--left to their own devices to play basketball and to soak in hot tubs and such.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
When one went to guest services desk there was a sign that no cabin changes were possible due to a full ship. The staffers who greeted you (with sanitizers) as you walk in a restaurant were the friendliest. But security was lax; and there was no staff in the library--which allowed for noise\, conversation and game-playing such as chess--not conducive to quiet reading or reflection.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Cabins were too small; noisy hallways; the public areas were kept clean but you would not want to use the public restrooms.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Cramped and noisy. Cleaning poorly executed.

Pros: The ship leaves from Manhattan--most convenient; but long\, long lines for boarding.

Cons: Food was awful. Entertainment lousy.

Recommends Norwegian Gem? No.
