Not the best cruise ever . . .

Regarding 12-day Eastern Canadian/Quebec City Norwegian Gen cruise ~ the cabins and public spaces were very clean, the staff/crew extremely helpful and friendly, two of the 4 ports were great; other two were lousy. We found there to be basically not comfortable seating; most especially uncomfortable being the Cagney's upscale restaurant and the lounges. We found ourselves either hiking onto a too tall chair/stool or needing assistance after being \"buried\" in others. The overall decor/florals/carpets are very dated, worn-looking and give a general sense of \"worn-out\"

Pros: attentive and friendly staff/crew\, good entertainment\, clean cabins and common areas\, dated/faded decor

Cons: seating was horrible\, food less than good\, poorly organized disembarkation\,

Recommends Norwegian Gem? No.

Ship Quality
We found our cabin\, as well as general common spaces to be clean\, crew were always visible doing cleaning. Our cabin steward was outstanding and very attentive/friendly.
Food and Dining
In comparing previous cruise food service (3 different cruise companies and about 8 cruises)\, we found the food to be okay. Servings in the Grand Pacific restaurant were less than gracious ~ 3 breaded/fried mushrooms as an appetizer\, no more than about 3 bites of what was listed as \"spinach with pork chop\". Not being much of a beef-eater nor fish\, I was surprised that Cagney's didn't offer a fowl or pork entree. The Italian specialty restaurant was delicious\, great service. We found the main ship's buffet service to be more than adequate. Without exception\, we found the lack of attentive dining service; too few doing too much. The staff were working as hard as possible but are over-extended.
Cabin / Stateroom
Not a comfort sitting space in the balcony room\, felt the movie selections should better relate to the general passenger community; showing \"Mary Poppins\" at 9:00 P.M. served NO purpose. Compared to other ships with \"open concept\" we found the partitioned bathroom to be crowded and limiting.
Service and Staff
Without exception\, all staff/crew were attentive\, friendly\, helpful and professional. Again\, as stated\, we feel the dining staff are being asked to do more with less; they are all over-extended and this may come as a results of \"open-dining\".
There is a wide variety of professional entertainment. We enjoyed the main events most evenings. Enjoyed the assorted lounge entertainment and were impressed with the variety.
