This was our first time on Norwegian. We sailed on the Gem. We were very disappointed with the service. It was slow and just not up to par with other cruise lines we've sailed on.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
1 out of 5
This is one of the areas that we were extremely disappointed in. We paid extra each evening to eat in the "better" dining rooms. Big disappointment. Between the poor quality and the poor service, it's a "no go".
Entertainment
1 out of 5
Entertainment was not up to same quality as on other ships. Usually you have Broadway style shows. Not on this ship.
Service and Staff
1 out of 5
We found the staff generally lazy. I speak four (4) different languages and have travelled all over the world. The bulk of the staff on this particular ship was from the Phillipines and most of them spoke very poor English. They were also lazy. It was difficult to get questions about menus, etc. answered - that's was if you could get their attention. Example: We ordered shrimp cocktail in Cagney's Steakhouse. The waiter walked to each table in the restaurant asking if the shrimp was theirs. Each table said "no". We we waiving & flagging the guy down to let him know it was ours. He looked right at us several times & even walked by us. People were telling him it was ours. It was a ridiculous show to say the least.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The ship was always clean. Layout was fine. We could easily find our way around the ship.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
We had an outside stateroom with a balcony. The size was good. Ships have come a long way in bathroom size as well. It was easy to move around in & quite comfortable.
We went ashore on our own. Went to see the Byzantine Museum. It was hard to find using their maps. When we finally found it, it was closed. Best shopping was at the Duty Free Shop at the port.
Lines to get up to Santorini via cable car are long. Getting back down is even worse. Sunsets are just as nice, and cheaper, on board ships. Just go to the top of the ship.
Best excursion is the Ultimate Beach Resort but it's extremely pricey. It was $170 per person. The food is so-so but the resort is very nice. The so-called sandy beach is not sandy at all. It's rocks just like the others but the resort is nice. Save your pennies.
