I'll start by saying it's tough to review a one-night cruise because the atmosphere, your fellow passengers, and the itinerary are so different from traditional 7-nighters on the same ship.

My best friend and I booked the Gem for a one-night cruise out of New York City. Since we were celebrating her birthday, we booked the two-bedroom Courtyard Villa A3 suite. Yes, it's expensive but worth it...especially if you're going on a longer cruise with several sea days.

The Courtyard itself was lovely although the pool is a bit small. Service was good. The attendant was even able to bring us specialty martinis from the bar downstairs. (We tried to get them ourselves but it was so crowded after sailaway that we couldn't get near the bar.)

It was great having the concierge make our dinner reservations and lunch at Cagney's was nice too.

Pros: Courtyard Villa, two-bedroom A3 suite, newness of the ship

Cons: Very crowded, smoking allowed in too many indoor public areas

Recommends Norwegian Gem? Yes!
