Thanksgiving Epic cruise

Sail Date: November 23, 2014

Traveled As: Family w/older children

Room Type: Suite

Cruised for Thanksgiving 2014.  Epic is a very nice ship, lots to do on-board for kids & adults. My teens liked the water slides. Layout of ship a bit confusing, always seem to have to go thru the Casino to get somewhere.  Been on other mega-ships before & didn't have to wait for the elevators as much as on Epic.  Food was good, but maybe not as elaborate as on other cruise lines.  Did not like that the shows onboard had to have reservations...these filled up on the 1st day, due to people making multiple reservations for multiple nights.  Shows were good, Blue Man Group and Legends, couldn't get in for the Cirque du Soliel dinnershow, loved the Howling Pianos, a very talented group of piano players!  Had a balcony cabin, which was very nice & spacious. Only quirk was the bathroom area, with a curtain that could be drawn while using the facilities.  The toilet area is small with the 'space-age' door that slides around Hubby is 6'3" and his knees hit the door when sitting.  Service was attentive, polite and quick.  Our cabin steward was very accommodating, made for a pleasant voyage.  On the downside, found that popular shore excursions filled up quickly (never had this experience on other cruise lines) and did not have a day in Grand Cayman due to rough seas and not being able to tender in to shore.  You would think that with all the money that cruise ships bring to the Grand Caymans, that they could afford to build a port/dock that would accommodate all sizes of cruise ships.  Since we missed this Port, we had 4 days at Sea instead of 3...a little disappointing! Have gone on several Southern Caribbean cruises out of San Juan P. R. and I think I prefer the islands in that region, just don't like the airport in San Juan, as it is very small & not many flights in/out of it on a daily basis.  Therefore, we chose a cruise out of Miami, FL.  Overall experience on this cruise was very good, relaxing, just not memorable as others we have taken in the past.

Ship Quality
Food and Dining
Didn't have a lobster nite, but did serve Thanksgiving dinner instead.
Service and Staff
Entertainment was good, but didn't like the reservation system to book a show, as it was very hard to get the night you wanted to see the show & shows booked up the 1st day of cruise.
Children's Programs Did not have kids in this program
Onboard Activities
Teens liked the water slides. Seemed to be lots of 'reserved' lounge chairs in the adult only area of ship, which never were occupied until much later in the day.
Destinations and Excursions
Not enough excursions for snorkelling & popular excursions filled up quickly.
Cabin / Stateroom
Very nice suite with large balcony. Bathroom area a bit small but no problem. The step up to the shower/tub is high, so if you are short take note. Found the lighting in the room very dim, hard to put on makeup as no mirror had a good lighting. Cabin needs a large overhead light in the center of the bathroom area to correct this. Lots of storage for your clothes, beach bags etc.
Miami, Florida
Easy to access the ship, lots of taxis & shuttle buses to the Port.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Took excursion to beach. Short bus ride. Beach was clean & had drink/food service for extra charges.
George Town, Grand Cayman
Missed this Port due to rough seas...could not tender in.
Cozumel, Mexico
Easy to disembark the ship, fairly long walk on pier to shore, but there was assistance for those who needed it. Lots of stores, restuarants within easy access of Port

Would have booked excursions before boarding the ship. However, did manage to arrange for excursions thru private vendors while at Port. Book nightly entertainment as soon as you board to avoid missing out on a popular show.
