Norwegian Dawn

12 Night Southern Caribbean (Tampa Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 21, 2020

Ship: Norwegian Dawn

Traveled as: Large Group

Reviewed: 4 years ago

Review summary

Thoroughly enjoyable cruise. The Dawn is a reasonably-sized that makes getting around the ship easy. The entertainment and staff are exceptional. We particularly enjoyed the itinerary on this cruise. Some parts of the ship are showing their age and need to be updated, particularly seating in general areas.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was swift and pleasant. It took about 15 minutes total.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Food was good, but not great. The head chef is Indian and there was always Indian food on the buffet, even though there didn't seem to be many people eating it. Both breakfast and lunch were very good. Dinners were unimaginative, but good. Other cruise lines have better dinner experiences. Desserts were very good.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Basic amenities, well kept up.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
This is the 2nd time we have cruised on the Dawn. Both times are our top two cruise experiences as far as entertainment goes.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff is very professional and friendly.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
We love that the ship isn't huge. It's very easy to get around. Some of the areas are showing a bit of age. Seats in the theater and dining areas are very uncomfortable and need updating.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Decent sized cabin. Bathroom layout is nice and takes advantage of the space available. Shower is the most roomy of any ship we have been on.

Ship tip

Entertainment is phenomenal. Don't miss the evening shows.

Ports of call

Tampa, Florida

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

5 out of 5
Beautiful port, with wonderful views of the surrounding Virgin Islands.

St. John's, Antigua

4 out of 5
Interesting port. Not much unique to do there though.

Bridgetown, Barbados

5 out of 5
Went to Carlisle Bay, which is absolutely stunning, clean, free of vendors, the water is great and teeming with sealife.

Castries, St. Lucia

5 out of 5
Visited the Pitons, which are stunningly beautiful. Hiked the Tet Paul Trail, which is an easy trail and provides wonderful views of the Pitons. The road getting there is very winding and goes up and down the hills between the port and Sufriere, the town just below the Pitons. We had a great guide that made the trip interesting. If you get carsick easily I recommend taking a catamaran there from the cruise port.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

5 out of 5
Less-developed island, with beautiful beaches and scenery.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
We love walking around Old San Juan, with the fort and many interesting shops and restaurants.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very quick and smooth.

Great review. I do wonder how much choice the head chef has in the menu and ingredients on ships and how much the corporate office dictates.
