My husband & I are both experienced (over 40 cruises) cruisers. Overall we enjoyed the cruise on Norwegian Dawn. There were certainly areas for improvement, but we did not see any "showstoppers" until the final day.
My husband has Atrial Fib, an occasional fast heartbeat. He is under the care of a specialist. We know what to do. When this happens, he needs to sit down or if that does not work, lie down (feet above head) and that restores the heart to normal sinus rhythm. If neither of those work, call the ambulance. In the ~10 years since this was diagnosed, we called the ambulance once.
On departure day, we left our cabin and were in the public areas when my husband had an incident. I immediately got him seated. After 15-20 minutes the heart rate was still racing. I found a crew member and told her we needed a bed for my husband to lie down. She arranged for a wheelchair and my husband was taken to the medical center. We did not ask to go to the medical center, I told them we did not need a Dr, just a bed. I was told there were beds in the Medical Center. When we got to the Medical Center, I again explained what was happening and that all we needed was a bed for him to lie down. We were directed to a room -- it was dark, quiet, and had a bed. Perfect. He lay down. He color improved, He lay quietly on the edge of sleeping for approximately 15-20 minutes. It was all good.
A medical center person came by and was clearly surprised to see us there. I explained what had happened. She asked politely if we wanted to see a Dr. I responded politely, no it was good. My husband was getting what he needed: laying down and resting. She left. She was back a few minutes later, asked a few appropriate questions (are you dizzy? etc) and again asked: "would you like to see a Dr?." My husband said no, this is what I need,
Then the wheels came off the cart. We were told, since my husband was refusing medical treatment, he needed to leave the medical center immediately. It was a liability to the medical center to have him there. No concern about his condition, no offer to find an alternate bed, no recognition that the ONLY thing he needed medically was being refused -- just leave. I was outraged. The woman left. My husband assured me his heart rate was now under control and we could safely leave. Otherwise we would not have risked his health and would have agreed to the totally-unnecessary Dr review. We prepared to leave.
Then the woman came back with a form I could sign -- a waiver of liability. She explained if I signed it, he could stay. I would have PREFERRED to give my husband another 15-20 minutes of rest so I read it. It stated we were leaving the medical facility against Drs orders and they would not be liable. I explained this waiver of liability form was not appropriate to the situation. We were not leaving against Dr orders, we had not seen a Dr. We were leaving because she TOLD us to leave because we REFUSED to see the Dr. And in any case, the form essentially said we had to leave.
So we left. Without the aid of the wheel chair which was now magically gone. Tacky, really tacky.
I complained to the cruise line customer service desk AND wrote a letter to the cruise line. To date, I have not had a satisfactory response.
Medical care is a critical service that we all hope we NEVER need to use. However, if I do need to use it I would like to have confidence that the medical staff is at LEAST as concerned about what the patient needs as they are about liability. Not on the Norwegian Dawn apparently.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Overall food quality was good. Lots of variety with different "complementary" and "pay extra options. Most ships have anytime dining now, but Norwegian does it best. Never made a reservation for the "complementary" venues and rarely had to wait. Would request seating by a window and staff accommodated that almost every time. Well done! Casual attire all the time -- LOVE that.
Specialty dining: both the Brazilian and Steak house were AWESOME. YUM!
Areas for improvement: the lack of variety for breakfast and lunch at the assorted restaurants, buffet, and grill got really old after 12 days. Need to swap it up a bit! examples:
- BBQ wings at the grill were GREAT day 1, by day 5 seeing those SAME BBQ wings again was a disappointment. Do skewers, seafood, SOMETHING different
- LOVED the corned beef hash at breakfast the 1st day. 12 days in a row? no. How 'bout hash browns? Or crepes? or or...
- And there are more flavors of ice cream than chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Lots of trivia (good). Loved the well stocked library with daily trivia, crossword, and soduku. Some demonstrations primarily in the atrium area. (good). Lots of for –fee or shopping/buy something oriented things (not good). Else, slim pickings… The one napkin folding session was PACKED (so lots of interest) and not very well done. No pool games (probably 'cause only one pool). Limited activities around the pool during the day (sexy legs contest & ice carving). I never COULD find the bean bag toss, etc held on deck 6 forward... Dance classes at strange times.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
Overall very very good:
- the couple who do the cirque du soleil type performance were mind blowingly amazing. I have never seen better. EVER
- Assorted "Guest" entertainers were generally good to excellent. Liked the fact they would do additional shows at 3PM on sea days. Nice extra! (Exception: I know comedy is hard, but the comic who started out GREAT just lost me with all the whoopie cushion jokes. 1 or 2 -- ok, fine. But it just kept going on and on... 'nuf already)
- Production shows were good, though the singers were not very strong/memorable. I'm used to walking out and thinking "WOW! What a voice". Not so much. Part may have been the material. And a couple of the production shows were EXCELLENT and a couple were borderline. One of the shows had a Broadway theme: I love broadway! Then one of the songs was NOT a Broadway song, but just thrown in (why? 'cause there aren't enough Broadway songs?) And then they spent way too much time on some not very good and somewhat obscure Broadway show ('cause the royalties were cheaper maybe?).
Service and Staff
3 out of 5
Overall good: cabin steward, restaurants, bar staff. Areas for improvement:
- drink service around the pool was terrible. Likely because of many folks on drink packages. No incentive to have staff asking. Instead had to go to the bar.
- Spa staff: I won a $100 certificate to the spa. I'm not really a spa person, but figured it might be fun to try. Found out the certificate was only for certain things which meant we had to pay ~ $25-50 plus 18% gratuity to use it. And the guy at the desk was a total SNOB. Very condescending and vaguely insulting. We gave the $100 certificate to another couple who ARE spa people and they ALSO got the condescending treatment so ALSO just walked away not using the certificate.
- Guest services: Complaining to them is a waste of time and energy.
- Medical Staff: See above. 'nuf said.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
Overall good: All the usual amenities. Certainly clean and well maintained. Theater is good, plenty of seats with good visibility. Loved the well stocked library. Some funky "can't get there from here" things, but I like that. Very manageable size. Liked the design/layout of the Venetian restaurant (tho what's with the pictures?) much better than the crowded/dark/noisy Aqua. Only concern: one pool. Was fine most days, but I shutter to think what it would be like with lots of kids (teens) on board.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Clean, well maintained. Only a porthole and small, but good 'nuf. Location near the front of the ship so could be rocky, but I think that's a positive!
Plenty of storage space. The light by the vanity/sitting area was not strong enough, but that's a nit.
The major flaw: the room was just too small for a third bed. The third bed (not used) essentially hung on the wall with random pieces of bedding hanging out. This protrusion was right next to the bed we slept in blocking the path on my side of the bed. When getting up on that side, you needed to bend over. There was not enough space to walk by straight up. Very weird and uncomfortable. I got up one night and rammed my shoulder just standing up. I can't imagine how it works when there is a third person in the cabin!
Tip: From international terminal, a 15 minute easy walk out of the terminal/dock area takes you to a hotel area where you can get free internet in the hotel lobby.
Either way hopefully your husband was ok. Do I or some others agree on your argument....no. But it's ok...we all have opinions. All that matters is if he is ok.
If it were my loved one, I'd ask for help or agree to waive liability. Neither of which she did. Unfortunately, they were following the protocol made necessary by the sue-happy populace that necessitates that process. No, I have sense enough to know that I have one of two options- get care, or get out. The medical center can't just let him lay there if she's denying treatment. Bottom line.
here's the deal nickandashley, the personell were asses. That's the problem with all medical places. They don't care about you if one, You can't or in this case don't want to pay, or they think they will be sued. I guess this treatment would be ok with you if it was your loved one
first of all, he wasn't in public nor on land. That's right, afib is nothing to fool around with. unless you don't need their help, then it's not so bad. They've been through it and lived it too. she knew what he needed and the medical center denied them.
Here's the deal, eddiemac, if you don't want medical care, get out of the medical center - the cruise ship was absolutely, positively, 100% in the right. He could have laid on a pool lounger, a couch, the floor, whatever. If you are laying in a bed, in the medical center, having an afib episode- you get treatment or you release them from any liability and GET OUT. It's that simple.
A free bed to lay in a medical center? I suppose if they went to any hospital on land they would have let him just lay on a bed for 15 minutes? Come on, let's be realistic here. Afib is nothing to fool around with. What would he have done if he was out in a public place. I think going to lay down in the medical center was the right thing to do but to get offended because you didn't want their help is shear stupidity. I've lived it, I've seen it and again the cruise ship was 100% in the right
I had food poisoning on my last cruise, The Breakaway. had to go to the medical center. They were wonderful. I was never charged a penny. They checked on me the whole cruise.
If anything happened to him and they were not treating him they could have been held liable down the road if they had no paperwork signed. My mother has Afib and the care center she went to said she was fine and not to worry about it, that she just needed to take it easy. She ended up with a massive heart attack hours later, coded on the table twice while trying to save her and was in a coma for days. She luckily pulled through but she was in rehab for months. I think the medical center was 100% right.
They were using a bed, not medical equipment. common courtesy and well being of a guest should've been priority. it sounds as tho the medical facility wasn't busy. I don't see where you get 'catered' to. Just needed to lie down for a couple minutes.
So you wanted your husband catered to but without medical staff. You wanted use of a medical facility but without medical treatment. What if someone had come in that was in medical crisis that wanted medical help and you guys were in the way? What if you or your husband got hurt in there even though you weren't being treated medically? I can understand WHY the ship needed you to sign the form. You kept telling them no to help so why would they have needed to keep medical equipment available to you?
