11 Night Southern Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Sail Date: November 23, 2011 Ship: Norwegian Dawn Cabin Type: Balcony Traveled As: Couple Reviewed: 6 years ago
Overall the ship is nice but the renovations that they have done on the Dawn have not extended themselves into the staterooms.
Food and Dining

There is very little variety in the food selection at the buffet and the dining rooms. You will see basically the same selection each day of your cruise unless you choose to pay extra to eat at their specialty restaurants. The food at the buffet is almost always "cold" even when they put a new tray of food out and there aren't really any chocolate desserts until the chocolate buffet at the end of the cruise, so bring some brownies or cookies with you if you like chocolate. On the plus side, I do have to say that they have the best crispy bacon in the mornings on the buffet.

I have been on many cruises over the years and in the past on other cruise lines the shows were more like Vegas shows. On the Dawn, most of the main evening entertainment was either a comedian (not funny), an impressionist, or magician. They only had two shows on our cruise that had Vegas type shows. They did have one night where The Second City was brought on and that was a good show. In regards to what's available on the TV, it is extremely limited. They play the same 4-5 movies the entire cruise so if you don't want to watch CNN, bring your own video library.
Service and Staff

Cabin steward was very nice/helpful. Staff at the buffet was friendly. Staff at the dining rooms were friendly but with slow service. The service at the Venetian dining room was extremely slow so for better service go to the Aqua dining room.

Cabin / Stateroom

They clearly do not maintain their staterooms. We had numerous maintenance issues in cabin 9102 the worst being that the toilet broke several times on the cruise and it took several complaints to get it fixed. We had a balcony room mid-ship and the creaking and groaning of the room was so loud that we wore ear plugs to bed to try to get some sleep. The bed in 9102 is also rock hard which leads to body aches in the morning. Not all rooms are like this so if you go on the Dawn definitely avoid room 9102. But any room on the Dawn is likely playing russian roulette.
Pros: The Itinerary of the cruise/ports
Cons: Lack of maintenance; the toilet in stateroom 9102 kept breaking
