Sail Date: July 01, 2007 Ship: Norwegian Dawn Cabin Type: Oceanview Traveled As: Large Group Reviewed: 9 years ago
We couldn't catch my 8 y.o. when he ran off the elevator. We stopped the first crew member with a radio. He said we had to go the front desk. The front desk told us to fill out a missing persons report. By the time anyone bothered to help us, my son could have been grabbed, raped and thrown overboard. For a ship that specizlies in family activities, their security should be better. If they have fire drills and other safety drills, why not a CODE ADAM drill?
You paid extra for EVERYTHING: Soft drinks are free on most lines, not here. Only water and ice tea were included. Soda was $63 per person per week. BINGO was included on other ships I've been on, not here ... $40 per session.
Food and Dining

The Garden Cafe buffet is on par with a cheap Vegas buffet. Not much variety and mediocre quality. The speciality restaurants were very good IF YOU COULD GET IN. On Mon nite we tried to make reservations for Cagneys on Wed nite. We were told we had to wait until Tues morning to make reservations. On Tues morning we were told that Cagneys was sold out for Wed nite! We tried 4x to get into the Italian place (making reservations the day before): sold out every time. At times during the day, only the Bimini Grill is open -- hamburgers & hot dogs are the only menu items. The free 'ice cream' was 1/2 scoop of i/c; if you wanted more, you got about 1/2 tablespoon.

The juggler was okay and that's the best show they had! Our friends on the cruise with us said the Second City Revue was terrible. The shows are scheduled at the same time of the seatings for the speciality restaurant. The casino surprisingly had a good selection of slots and tables. But smoking is allowed in all areas of the casino. The piano player who was filling in at the Martini Lounge was excellent. We went back 3 nights to listen to him play.

The program was very good. The children were involved in fun and creative activities. The staff was EXCELLENT. My 5 y.o. cried when we dropped him off the first day. When we picked him up, he couldn't wait to go back the next day!
Service and Staff

We ran into dozens and dozens of staff and crew. Only 2 went above & beyond. The restaurant hostesses were rude, except for the girl at Cagneys who went out of her way to get us into the restaurant.

The main lobby was taken up by the Java Cafe, a store and jewelry tables which left little room for front desk activities and created long lines.
There is only one main pool area which was EXTREMELY crowded.
The first several days there was garbage, dirty dishes, etc. around on every deck but that seemed to disappear after two days.
Several rugs were torn and ripped at the seems.
Cabin / Stateroom

We were told we were getting a queen and 2 bunk beds. We got 3 twin beds & 1 bunk bed. (The bunk beds had a warning not to let children sleep on them to avoid injuries. Don't most parents think the kids are going on the bunk beds?) The rugs were faded in the room, the bathroom smelled of urine the entire week & no clock was in the room. The stewards, however, did keep the room clean, no small task with 2 adults & 2 children sharing the room. (We were on Deck 5).
Cons: Too many to list here....security, food, shows and on and on
