The Breakaway - Stay Away

Sail Date: April 01, 2013

Reviewed: 3 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Balcony

The ship is beautiful and that beauty is skin-deep. Public areas are cramped. Little room to sit. Small pool area. Despite multiple venues\, included dining is mediocre and monotonous\, no doubt a marketing ploy to force passengers into the extra cost restaurants. Small balconies. Crew is very attentive and friendly. NCL customer service is indifferent and borders on the deceptive.

Pros: Beautiful New Ship

Cons: Overcrowded. Over-hyped. Poor NCL customer service. Mediocre food.

Recommends Norwegian Breakaway? No.

Ship Quality
We were on the first transatlantic sailing so of course the ship would be spotless. But public areas are scant. \"The Waterfront\" outdoor restaurants is a great concept but on warm-weather voyages\, reserve early. There are no more than 10 outdoor seats in each venue.
Food and Dining
The food was not up to the same standards as our cruise on the Gem in 2012. Main dining rooms were monotonous and identical. Garden Cafe was variable. Some excellent choices and sometimes cold\, limp. Food was definitely over-salted. Extra cost restaurants were elegant and many levels above the included dining.
Cabin / Stateroom
In Spa Balcony room. Balcony more closely resembled a ledge. Very comfortable bed. But bed was directly beside the closet making access inconvenient and downright difficult.
Service and Staff
Staff quality was great. But stewards did not begin to make up rooms until early afternoon. A definite inconvenience.
Entertainment
Multiple entertainment venues. But theater seats around 800. Inadequate on a 4000 passenger ship. Most reserve for even the free performances. Moving toward pay performances\, such as the Cirque Dreams. Dreams was excellent but at $39 for premium seating was to include dinner. It was more like a tasting menu. Other bar venues might have entertainment but definitely designed to sell expensive drinks. Ice Bar was a unique idea but at a $20/person cover charge including choice of 2 vary bizarre mixed drinks\, just another example of how anything unique on the Breakaway comes at extra cost.
