An OK Cruise

Sail Date: June 25, 2012

Reviewed: 4 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Oceanview

Stateroom was very small, shower miniscule... We were only in a standard room, not a superior. A/C wouldn't get cool enough.

Cruise staff warmed up to guests, but at first seemed a little stand-offish.

Food was good, but I didn't like the nickle-and-dime approach to charging for certain steaks, espresso, etc. in the dining room and for certain juice at the buffet. That's what specialty restaurants are for.

Shows were really good. Show orchestra was fantastic! Live music was good, too. One of the two shows was at 10:45 -really late for a show.

For an older ship about to be retired, it was OK.

Pros: I liked the individual food stations instead of one LONG line at the buffet

Cons: The tiny cabin would not get cool enough.

Recommends Monarch of the Seas (RETIRED)? No.

Cabin / Stateroom
Stateroom was tiny in our ocean view (porthole) cabin. Shower was miniscule. I'm not a big guy and my shoulders both touched the shower curtain and the wall at the same time. A/C didn't get cool enough at any time although thermostat was on lowest setting.
Ship Quality
A booklet or folder of ship layout would have been nice. Had to learn our way around by trial and error. This was somewhat frustrating.
Service and Staff
Staff was a little distant and aloof at first, but warmed up after a while.
Food and Dining
Food was really good. The individual stations at the buffet were nice. It helped to avoid really long lines. Variety was excellent -especially at the buffet. There was something for just about every culture and taste that I could imagine -from hamburgers to goat curry.
Entertainment
Lots of fun stuff to do & something for almost everyone. Shows were excellent. Light and sound staff was exceptional. Show orchestra was fantastic! Sax and trumpet guys were off the hook!
Children's Programs
I'm an old geezer and didn't have children or grands aboard, but the captain shared that there were over 600 kids on board. The children's programs must have been super for the kids not to be all over the place. The kids' staff must have really earned their pay on this cruise. Thanks...
