This was going to be our relaxing cruise. No tours, just enjoying the ship. This was our 4th cruise, second with Royal Caribbean.Last year we took a 14 day Hawaiian cruise on the Radiance of the Seas (fantastic). The Monarch was a complete let down. The New Year's celebration was very nice. With balloons in the Centrum falling at Midnight and free champagne. But the rest was not up to the Royal Caribbean reputation. The first thing we noticed was the wear and tear on the carpet in the main corridors. Very worn, with holes and it did not appear clean. The balancy furniture has seen better days. The outside decks were always scattered with glasses, cups and food. The service was not up to Royal Caribbean standards either. The only friendly person was our cabin attendant. He was great. The bartenders act as if you were a bother to them. Not one time on this cruise did I have a server come up to me at the pool or the casino as ask if I wanted something to drink. My biggest problem with this ship was the food. I have need seen or tasted such unappealing food. The Windjammer, which I couldn't wait to get to enjoy, was TERRIBLE. You were served the same food in one form or another, which was tasteless. We went there one night for dinner and it was a chore to find something that was worth eating. The dining room food had no taste and the appearance was not attractive at all. Nothing like the dining rooms on other ships. This was the first cruise I was on where I did not look forward to meal time. The only good thing I can say about this cruise is we did get away for New Year's and the embarking and disembarking process went very well. I have noticed that Royal Caribbean has it over Carnival in this area. But it has been a few years since we were on Carnival. Will we cruise Royal Caribbean again? Yes, but it will always be on the Radiance of the Seas or one of their newest ships. I am planning one at this moment. We wanted a short cruise, but it wasn't worth it.Joy & Dale Martin and Linda Urban
