20th Anniversary Cruise

Room Type: Oceanview

This was our first cruise and what a way to start our cruise experience. We heard so many wonderful things about "cruising" that we came with very high expectations. As high as they were, they were surpassed! While we paid a little more to sail Royal Caribbean, after our experience we see why and will look to Royal Caribbean as our prefered cruise line for all future cruises.

The on-boarding process went very smoothly and our bags were in our room shortly after boarding, so we could work on getting settled right away. The pre-departure safety drill was awkward but understandable. The overall condition and visual asthetics of the ship was amazing. My wife is prone to sea sickness, but had no problems during the cruise, the ship was incredibly smooth and most of the time we could tell the ship was actually in motion.

The ships facilities and amenities kept us entertained and occupied at all times. I wish we would have discovered the value of the "Daily Compass" which outlines all of the events and schedule earlier; we would have been more efficient with our time and planning our on ship activities. The length of our cruise was perfect for the size of our ship. Anything shorter would not have allowed us to take advantage of the ships amenities that we desired and by the 8th day, we had seen and done everything on board that was of interest to us.

The only area of disappointment was the food, especially in the Windjammer Buffet. I expected food to be more readily available throughout the ship, but it was limited to the one buffet and dining halls which had specific and limited hours of operation. The quality of the food in the buffet was also very poor. I did not dine at any of the "specialty" restaurants on board and was surprised to find out there was an additional charge for them.

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic cruise and appreciate the attentive nature of the entire crew and our experience on the Mariner of the Seas.

Pros: The Ship, Crew and overall environment were much better than our already high expectations.

Cons: The food in the Windjammer Buffet, especially breakfast was terrible.

Recommends Mariner of the Seas? Yes!

Food and Dining
Food in the dining hall was good, not great but good. The Windjammer buffet was terrible, especially breakfast. Eggs are powdered, bacon is greasy and thin sliced so you can only get a clump of bacon, not a slice of bacon and the sausage was inedible. I found it odd and frustrating that there were restaurants on board, but an additional fee ($20 per person per meal) was required to dine in them. This was the most disappointing part of the cruise experience for us, but it did not over ride the rest of our favorable experience.
Cabin / Stateroom
Somewhat small, but very well laid out, maintained and functional.
Ship Quality
Wow, what a ship. Ice skating rink, movie theater, stage theater, on board spa facility, rock climbing wall, numerous pools and hot tubs, promenade (small indoor mall), Chapel all maticulously maintained by the crew. Head and shoulders above other cruise ships that we saw in our ports of call. 1st Cruise for us, so we could not compare to other ships we've sailed on, but after what we experienced on the mariner and what we heard from other "Cruisers" we will select Royal Caribbean as a preferred cruise line on future cruises.
Service and Staff
The Retail staff were Ok, but at times seemed to be following rules or guidelines that they did not really understand so were unflexible about seemingly simple requests that would normally be done in the US. The wait staff was PHENOMENAL everywhere on the ship.
The various genre's of music had something for just about everyone. The Pianist , especially Rodric, were very skilled and we enjoyed listening to them play in the evenings after dinner. Made for a very romantic environment.
