Review summary

Because I did not want to give my credit card information to the cruise line, and find out next month that their system had been hacked and all of my credit card information was public record, I decided to have a cash account. When I got on board the ship I found out that drinks are not included in the price you pay for the cruise. As I said, my wife had cruised in the past and at that time everything was included in the price. I decided to purchase the one time drink ticket so I wouldn't need to pay the bar bill each time. This was almost $300 for three nights and two days. I didn't think I could drink that much but I got a bar ticket from the bartender anyway. Of course when I tried to use it it was no good because I needed to go down to guest services and pay for it, which I did. Also, at the request of the person at guest services I deposited an additional $300 for anything else that may arise. Near the end of the second day I went down to guest services to settle my account, expecting to get a refund on my $300, and found out that the original payment had not been recorded and they had no record of it. The result was I owed them more money but I did complain about it. They said they would look into it and that for our trouble they would give us a 20% discount on future cruises. They couldn't just refund the money I overpaid, instead they sent me a certificate for $176, not a 20% discount . But the certificate is only good if I use it on a future cruise. Which is not likely!

Embarkation

4 out of 5
It was my first cruise and was a little confused about the boarding times. We arrived just as the doors were closing, but got on board without a problem.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Dinner was excellent. Breakfast was not good. They don't know how to cook grits or eggs. Drinks are very expensive or you buy an outrageously priced one time drink card.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Evening shows were enjoyable. Do not get good odds at the casino. They do not allow surrender at the blackjack tables. Play blackjack on four continents. This is the only casino I know that doesn't allow surrender.

Entertainment

5 out of 5

Children's Programs

Didn't bring any children.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Service from personnel was good. Had a bad smell in state room. Room Stewart worked hard to remedy this but problem was with engineering. Finally resolved, after two days.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Ship was well maintained and clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Ocean view with porthole-could only see bottom of lifeboat. Stateroom very small as bed was touching wall on one side so senior citizen had to climb over wife to get in to an out of bed.

Ship tip

Don't buy excursions on board. You can get them for half-price after you get ashore. Same excursion.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

2 out of 5
Had to use remote parking lot, very far from ship. Needed bus for transportation to and from parking lot.

Nassau, Bahamas

4 out of 5
Enjoyed this port. Purchase some good cigars.

Cococay (Cruise Line's Private Island)

1 out of 5
Unless you're going to try to spend all day in the water this port is a total waste of time. Also, you really can't spend all day in the water as you arrive there about 11:30 AM and have to be back on the ship at 3 PM.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
This was excellent because I was glad to get off the ship.

It's always safer to use a credit card, you can always dispute a charge but unless you purchase a drink package they are not included. Also a few years back our information was exposed through a breech and I went to the credit reporting agencies and froze our info for free, transition, experian, and equifax. Then your info is always protected and you can also lift the freezes for free if you want to apply for a new credit card or loan. We were about the only ones who didn't have false tax filings and unauthorized credit cards.

oddly paranoid reason to not use credit card. why have one at all??

It's the Norwegian Sky that has the free open bar on all cruises. I just checked their site.

They don't give tickets if you purchase the drink package. And drinks have never been included in most standard cruise packages. Sounds like some false information you are giving.

Norwegian has a older/smaller ship and drinks are included that's the only one I know of, but I'd also be upset if I overpaid and wasn't refunded my money.

Drinks are never included I've been cruising since 1990

You put cash down on your account and didn't get a receipt? That is just bad practice anywhere. Also, get promises in writing with any business dealings.

Research and read all the fine print. It's clearly stated that beverages are not part of your cruise fare. Your issue with the additional deposit you paid is unfortunate. Did you not ask for a receipt or something stating that you paid an additional deposit. I would never turn over that kind of cash (especially while traveling) without getting proof of it.

Seems like this is a complainer. Every one of the post from the port to the destinations were complaints. I have always had a blast on RC Majesty.

Purchasing drinks separately is pretty standard in the cruise industry, unless you book a charter or purchase a vacation package that specifically includes drinks.

How long ago did your wife cruise in the past because I sailed on Royal Caribbean back in the 90s and drinks weren't included. Don't know a cruise ship that includes drinks except NCL and that's if you select the drink package and I wouldn't go so far to say "included" since it's really factored into your rate. It sounds like you didn't research anything prior to cruising you just booked and went.
