This was our first cruise and we selected this ship because of the length of the trip as well as the ports included. We relied heavily on reviews so we wanted to do our part and write one as well.
Boarding: Boarding the ship was very easy and being a suite quest everything was very quick. We dropped off our luggage and were on the ship within 30 – 45 minutes of parking our car.
Port Parking: The parking garage was directly across from the boarding terminal so it was a quick walk and in the Miami heat that is a huge plus. The cost was $80 and well worth it to be able to avoid the crowds waiting on shuttles etc. We were able to be on the road within 15 minutes of going through customs.
Ship Appearance: Overall the ship was very nice considering her age. We did notice some wear and tear especially on the windows but were not surprised as we read about this on several reviews before booking.
Stateroom: The grand suite was nice and had lots of room to move around in, plenty of storage and a good size bed. The room attendant did a good job of keeping the room clean and stocked with towels and was very friendly. The bathroom while bigger than other rooms was a little on the small side with a single sink etc. Please note if you are a light sleeper this may not be the room for you. We did hear a lot of noise from the restaurant above all day and most of the night. We use a fan app on our tablet so most of it was muffled out but without the fan noise we would have slept very little. The balcony was very large with a lot of unused space due to only having two small chairs. This would have been a great place to take a nap if they had a lounger as well. Overall the suite was nice, not great but also not horrible.
Suite Perks: Royal Caribbean boast a lot of perks if you stay in a GS or above. We found that once onboard we were left guessing about what was included and missed out on a lot. The company needs to do a better job explaining what is available especially with first time cruisers. This ship is smaller so it does not have all the perks of the larger ships. One thing to note is they advertise free pressing on your first formal night on all of the ships for GS or above guest. When we asked the room attendant he seemed puzzled and we were charged to press our clothes. The ship also does not have a laundry facility like the bigger ships so make sure you pack enough.
Entertainment: The cruise director Carlos and his team did a great job. One member of his team Isaac (from Spain) did an amazing job! He was truly the life of the party and got everyone involved and kept us laughing nonstop. They did a 70’s night that was a blast. Lots of great music and dancing. The karaoke nights were entertaining and a nice way to relax. Battle of the sexes is a must see. We laughed until we cried. They also had a quest game that was great. Guest had to work together on teams to obtain some funny items. The beauty pageant at the end was hilarious. Overall the team did an awesome job.
Food: Not horrible but defiantly not great either. We ate in the windjammer two times and had stomach issues both times so we steered clear of it the rest of the cruise. If you are into buffets the windjammer did have lots of choices and different selections however nothing was hot. This ship only has a couple of choices for specialty restaurants and they did not really appeal to us so we chose to eat in the main dining room on deck 4 every night except one. The food was ok nothing to write home about. The seared scallops gave us a laugh as they looked like scallop raisins they were so small. The staff was great and did an awesome job of bringing extra things for us to try and making sure we were happy with the selections. We did the chef’s table one night and it was a great experience. The price seems high but the whole experience was well worth it. You get five courses over 3 hours with different wines and the chef comes in and speaks to you about each course. The captain came in and talked to us and even took some pictures so overall it was a great evening.
Spa: Overpriced! The $65 pedicure was way overpriced for what you get. Yes they use some nice lotion and oils but that really was it. My advice is to get one at home before you board.
1.Nassau – We read a lot of reviews where people do not leave the ship for this port and now we understand why. This port is hot, crowded and full of pushy locals. The shopping was ok but not worth the hassle. We stayed off the ship 3 hours tops.
2.Coco Cay – Fabulous! The fee to rent a cabana is well worth it. We enjoyed a nice relaxing day just enjoying the sound of the waves and one of the only times on the cruise the food was really good.
3.Key West – Beautiful and no pushy locals. I would recommend taking one of the trolley or train tours as we decided to walk the city and with the heat we did not enjoy it as much. The shopping is similar to outlet shopping found in many cities.
4.Miami – The city is gorgeous and we plan on coming back for a longer stay. We did not get to see a lot only being in the city for 12 hours before cruising and we left immediately when the cruise ended.
Leaving the ship: The whole process of getting off the ship was a huge disappointment from leaving at a port or leaving the ship at the end of the cruise. A lot of this was due to lack of communication about how the process works and again boasting about perks if you stay in the more expensive rooms. They advertise priority exiting but that did not turn out to be the case. Everyone is in the same lines to get off for all of the ports etc. They gave us information about being able to leave early on the final day and gave a meeting point of the library and a special carrousel number for our luggage pickup. The frustrating part of this “plan” is that you can’t get to the library without waiting in the same line as everyone else and then when you finally get through the line there was no information about next steps, no employee to answer questions and the library was full of sleeping people. The special carrousel was nothing special, lots of people leaving at different times than they were scheduled for so the lines were horrible. Once you get your luggage then you are moved to another long line for immigration. The workers yelling at us nonstop to move forward, create two lines and stay together made it feel like we were in a cattle line. We understand the need for a process but some people skills would go a long way.
