Best Cruise Yet by JackieC5

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Singles/Friends

We just returned from the 15 day Ft. Lauderdale to Montreal cruise. It was a wonderful cruise; one we will look back on for years to come. It started off with a negative which was assigning us the late dinner rather than the 6:00 time we requested months in advance. Other than that, everything was excellent. I could not believe all the closet and drawer space which I loved....no cramped up clothing that would require ironing before wearing. the cabins were very comfortable and the beds were great. Holland America is our favorite cruise line and we will continue to cruise with them.

Wow! What a crew. by MartinR2

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

This was the best cruising experience my wife and I have every had. I love repositioning cruises because you get to see a greater variety of ports with some stops that don't usually see very many cruise ships. This was the case with our itinerary starting from Fort Lauderdale and ending in Montreal. We really enjoyed all the ports but my favorites were Savannah,Ga (the people), New London,CT (the people and the 11 cannon salute welcome), and Quebec City (it's just beautiful). We hadn't been to the east coast before in our travels, (from Kansas), so this variety wetted our appetite for further exploration on land. We've been on 6 cruises on 4 different lines and the friendliness of the crew of the Maasdam is exceptional. You can tell that the humor, helpfulness, and joy of life begins with Captain Henk through his infrequent anouncements and from his appearances at various funtions. This is further promoted by Cruise Director Adam and all the staff. To encounter a crew member on the stairs while they're cleaning and receive a warm greeting and smile is wonderful. I must add that my wife and I were in the younger 5% of the passengers onboard. That is to be expected on a Holland America cruise of longer than 7 days. Even though most were older, they were a vibrant group who enjoy the quality that Holland America provides.

Terrible Practice by RobertJ17

Sail Date: / Traveled As:

While this story probably will not make the sources of many of your articles happy, it should be told. Recently I spent a good deal of time trying to put together the schedules for three couples to take a cruise. Trying to select destinations of interest to all was hard enough but the most difficult part was determining the length of the cruise and the dates. This being accomplished we made and received bookings on Holland America's Maasdam 01/05/08, cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale to the Southern Caribbean. We have been notified that HAL has chartered the entire ship to Jazzsea Cruises and our reservations have been canceled. This action simply to increase profits is deployable. If this is their "Signature of Excellence", I don't care to have their autograph. Robert T. Jones Booking 8K3VMQ

WOW! what a cruise, it was GREAT!!!! by FrankB163692785

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Holland America is the forth company that we have cruised with, they are a step above the rest. The crew was the best I have seen on a cruise ship always smileing and acomadating. The food and waiters were out of this world, they seemed to know what you wanted before you asked for it(they were amazing) The wine selection was fantastic and priced right. We loved the entertainment, the shows were on a par with Vegas and the multi piano bars are above and beond the competition. The only problem I have after this cruise is getting back into my clothes. We will use Holland America and book it thru Alaska Air in the future---the really big thing, all those air miles. I like the pre payment of tips, it saves a lot of time.

A historic treat! by SheriG1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

The Maasdam is a nice size ship with very little crowding and an amazing staff. We got a GREAT deal on this sailing on an S category suite and enjoyed the services in the Neptune Lounge very much. We highly recommend this cruise to those who enjoy relaxation (this is a slower paced, history rich cruise) and a port intensive itinerary.

Perfect weather for a New England Cruise by DavidA29

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

My spouse and I enjoyed the cruise and most of the port of calls. Some were too short which made it difficult to select shore trips since you had only time to go on one of them, and the one you selected may or may not have been what you had hoped for. The people in EVERY port of call was the most friendly I have ever encountered. Getting off in Boston and listening to some of the port staff conversations made me long for getting back on the ship and sailing back to Canada.

An Outstanding Cruise Experience! by DennisW5

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

This was our seventh cruise, but our first with Holland America and this was a wonder eleven day cruise. The Maasdam is an older ship, but beautifully appointed and well kept. The Rotterdam (formal dinning) and the Lido (casual dinning) restaurants featured some of the best food of any cruise we have experienced. The service was exceptional in both restaurants. It was fun to have our server on Lido call us by name after having heard them only once. There was always something to do onboard Maasdam or you could do nothing at all. We were surprised to find that a ship of this size featured an indoor movie theater, a well equipped gym, and a three deck Atrium. Our stateroom was both cozy and spacious including a bathtub and not just a cramped shower. The shore excursions were well planed, but the private island offered a wonderful opportunity to just relax and enjoy. Overall, our cruise experience on the Maasdam was one to the best.

A Relaxing Cruise by RalphR1

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

HAl seems to be somewhat a subdued cruise line. There wasn't the carnival like atmosphere that we've enjoyed on other cruise ships. If you are looking for a 'relaxing' cruise where all you do is lounge around all day than this ship is for you. We were on an 11-day cruise and after a few days of this it did get quite boring. The cruise director staff needs to get on deck and liven things up!!! Even the bars in the evening were low keyed. We're use to Karoake and skits, etc. that are on other ships. HAL had the piano bar, and low keyed bands. Even the nightlife in the Crowsnest was somewhat played down. The ship's staff seemed to have a good time but the paying passengers were left out in the cold.

Amazing by agshaw2

The BEST cruise Line I have very cruised on and i have been on many ships.

I rate this one to be top notch and had a separate Vegan menu with many vegan daily choices in main dining room. I highly recommend this ship. It is a little price compared to others but well worth the money.

I recommend this ship for anyone and especially Vegans.

A disaster. Embarkation took 3... by ArthurK

A disaster. Embarkation took 3 hours and things got worse. Kids all over the ship with no supervision. Food bland and poorly served by people who couldn't understand English. Amateur shows (when you could find a seat). All in all, not a great cruise, so save your money.

Once again Holland America has... by MargieM2

Once again Holland America has surpassed all expectations. Cruising the Western Caribbean for the first week of September was just what I needed after a long tedious summer. Relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, the shipboard activities, a couple of excursions was my main goal, and the Maasdam provided a wonderful break. I have only praise for this cruise line after trying several others...if your after peace, relaxation, excellent food and a pleasant trip, Holland America fits the bill. c.m.

First Cruise by Meg4836520

The embarkation was delayed due to weather. Port of Norfolk, disjointed and disorganized. Ship itself, lovely. Food, mostly excellent and service very nice. We had a terrific cabin steward who always seemed to be waiting somewhere just out of sight. Wine steward at dinner was also excellent. Ship was clean, well maintained, and clearly professional all the way. We would have liked more music later into the night, but shows they had were very good. The fact that Holland America is a "green" operation encouraged us to sail with them, since we are concerned about ocean dumping, which they do not do. It is an older crowd which "party animals" might find too sedate, but we found our tablemates entertaining and engaging. My only complaint would be to organize shore excursions better. Maybe it was because it was our first experience, that it seemed a bit chaotic. All in all, an excellent and inexpensive way to spend ten days in the Caribbean.

I sailed on the Maasdam... by LouisD1

I sailed on the Maasdam 9/23/2001. This was my first time with HAL and it was a very enjoyable cruise. This cruise line does cater to the eldery and the handicapped and have the perfect crew to service such a clientele. I have been on over 20 cruises and the service on this ship was the best. Service was always very friendly and personable; they often went the extra mile to accommodate customer requests. I found the food to be excellent in both quality and taste. The only room for improvement, in my opinion, is in the entertainment catagory. It was okay, but I have seen better. Would I do this again?...YOU BET!Louis DMichigan

The atmosphere was very relaxing... by 254

The atmosphere was very relaxing and laidback but yet with a lot of optional activities. Food and service were fabulous! Embarking was easy but disembarking was a pain in the terminal and waiting outside the port you had to stand since there was no seating (not too good for senior citizens and people with disabilities), but pretty typical of other cruise lines as well. I highly recommend this cruise.

THIS WAS MY SECOND CRUISE.... by RobertB24

THIS WAS MY SECOND CRUISE. I TOOK ONE IN FEBRUARY WITH NCL, BUT WHAT A DIFFERENCE HALIS. HAL HAD THE BEST FOOD AND THE BEST ACTIVITIES.THE PORT OF CALLS WERE SO MUCH FUN. I HAD MORE FUN BEING WITH OLD PEOPLE THAN THE YOUNG ONES, THOUGH I AM ONLY 24.I HAD A MINI-SUITE, AND MY GOD, IT WAS BIG WITH A BIG PRIVATE BALCONY AND A NICE ROMANTIC BATH TUB. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE COMPLAINABOUT THE STAFF IF THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH. IF YOU LISTEN, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING. THIS WAS THE BEST CRUISE. I WILL BE GOING AGAIN, AS I BOOKED A CRUISE FOR SEPTEMBER ON THE MAASDAM ******* THE BEST
