A disaster. Embarkation took 3 hours and things got worse. Kids all over the ship with no supervision. Food bland and poorly served by people who couldn't understand English. Amateur shows (when you could find a seat). All in all, not a great cruise, so save your money.

Once again Holland America has... by MargieM2

Once again Holland America has surpassed all expectations. Cruising the Western Caribbean for the first week of September was just what I needed after a long tedious summer. Relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, the shipboard activities, a couple of excursions was my main goal, and the Maasdam provided a wonderful break. I have only praise for this cruise line after trying several others...if your after peace, relaxation, excellent food and a pleasant trip, Holland America fits the bill. c.m.

THIS WAS MY SECOND CRUISE.... by RobertB24

THIS WAS MY SECOND CRUISE. I TOOK ONE IN FEBRUARY WITH NCL, BUT WHAT A DIFFERENCE HALIS. HAL HAD THE BEST FOOD AND THE BEST ACTIVITIES.THE PORT OF CALLS WERE SO MUCH FUN. I HAD MORE FUN BEING WITH OLD PEOPLE THAN THE YOUNG ONES, THOUGH I AM ONLY 24.I HAD A MINI-SUITE, AND MY GOD, IT WAS BIG WITH A BIG PRIVATE BALCONY AND A NICE ROMANTIC BATH TUB. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE COMPLAINABOUT THE STAFF IF THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH. IF YOU LISTEN, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING. THIS WAS THE BEST CRUISE. I WILL BE GOING AGAIN, AS I BOOKED A CRUISE FOR SEPTEMBER ON THE MAASDAM ******* THE BEST

First Cruise by Meg4836520

The embarkation was delayed due to weather. Port of Norfolk, disjointed and disorganized. Ship itself, lovely. Food, mostly excellent and service very nice. We had a terrific cabin steward who always seemed to be waiting somewhere just out of sight. Wine steward at dinner was also excellent. Ship was clean, well maintained, and clearly professional all the way. We would have liked more music later into the night, but shows they had were very good. The fact that Holland America is a "green" operation encouraged us to sail with them, since we are concerned about ocean dumping, which they do not do. It is an older crowd which "party animals" might find too sedate, but we found our tablemates entertaining and engaging. My only complaint would be to organize shore excursions better. Maybe it was because it was our first experience, that it seemed a bit chaotic. All in all, an excellent and inexpensive way to spend ten days in the Caribbean.

I sailed on the Maasdam... by LouisD1

I sailed on the Maasdam 9/23/2001. This was my first time with HAL and it was a very enjoyable cruise. This cruise line does cater to the eldery and the handicapped and have the perfect crew to service such a clientele. I have been on over 20 cruises and the service on this ship was the best. Service was always very friendly and personable; they often went the extra mile to accommodate customer requests. I found the food to be excellent in both quality and taste. The only room for improvement, in my opinion, is in the entertainment catagory. It was okay, but I have seen better. Would I do this again?...YOU BET!Louis DMichigan

It was a well done... by JosephS4

It was a well done cruise. The ports were very nice to visit. Liked the two days at sea and especially enjoyed Half Moon Cay on the last day. The food was plentiful and very good.

We have been on a... by JudyR7

We have been on a few crusies in the past. The most recent was on the Westerdam, on February 1, 2002. It did cost a few extra dollars but was well worth the money. We saw maybe 5 kids the whole 8 nights. We sailed on the Norway in June of 2002 and there were over 250 kids from Brazil with little supervision and what a nightmare that was. All in all... Holland America is our line of choice. We are leaving on the Maasdam the 19 of May and will let you know what happens.

We often look through the... by JudyR7

We often look through the reviews before booking. It gives you an idea of what may happen on your cruise. What I found interesting about the reviews for the Maasdam was that there were 4 out of 21 from Arthur K. from Ca. It seems that even when he was having a bad time it must of been good because according to his writting he keeps taking the trip! I have been on Holland America and can tell you that if you are looking for nice relaxing time with wonderful food and very interesting crew members, this is the cruise for you.

The stateroom I was in... by PaulR7

The stateroom I was in was on the Navigation Deck, supposedly the best. However, it was dirty and the bedding had burn holes in it, and the fridge had mold growing. The food selection was very limited. You had to eat in there at two-hour intervals or order room service from a menu with about 10 items on it. Several items on the ship were inoperative at the time of this cruise, (i.e., entry doors in cafeteria, floors that buckled under pressure). On the plus side, the staff on board was very nice. Also beware of heavy smokers on board. I'm from California and not used to the smell everywhere on board.

We sailed on the June... by CharlesC8

We sailed on the June 22nd cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. Embarkation was a little long, but we were greated with white glove service and escorted to our room, and our children's room. We had a deluxe suite and our kids stayed in an inside stateroom. Both were very comfortable. Our room steward, Ronnie, was very good and gave us all the service we expected. We did have a little problem with our children's lock in their stateroom, but it was taken care of in a timley manner.Room service was great. Had my coffee every morning at the excact time I requested. All the food everywhere was great, I had read many reviews to the negative, I did not find this so, I think it was in most people making the wrong selections. You see, I believe HAL is making an effort to please all passengers. Some food is bland, some is spicy and some is to die for. Always fresh and always pleasant......and you did not PAY for ice CREAM ever!!You cannot blame the ship for the ports. There is something at every port for everyone, just reserch it more before you blame the ship. All in all, it was great, always something to do. Chocolate midnight buffet was Great.WE WILL TRAVEL ON HAL AGAIN!!Chuck and Kathi Casamasima

The cruise staff could have... by 175

The cruise staff could have made themselves a little more visible in the public areas where the people were instead of holding their activities inside in the lounges all day. A game of trivia poolside would have been nice and some music out on the fantail pool would have been appreciated. Over all the quality of the food and cruise itself was as good as we have come to expect from Holland America. We will go again.

Embarkation at Port Everglades in... by JerryF5

Embarkation at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale was quick and easy. I used the online registration before I arrived to make the process even faster. Our cabin was on the lower promenade deck and was attended to by our cabin steward, Atip. He was attentive, friendly and kept the cabin spotless. Any requests we made were quickly taken care of and with a smile. He also followed up to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction. This type of service was typical of all the staff we encounted during the week. Dining was also a positive experience. Our dinner waiter, Bina, was professional and attentive and made each evening's dinner a relaxed experience for all at the table. The food could not have been better. The menu each night provided an interesting mix of entrees, soups and desserts. The movie theatre and popcorn are a real treat when you want to get away from the ship's activity.Disembarkation was easy and we were off the ship within 90 minutes of docking.

Well, we just got back... by JudyR7

Well, we just got back on the 26th and it was a nice trip. The entertainment was 3 stars, but still nice. The food was good on the Lido, but the dining leaves a lot to be desired. We did have lobster the last night. Seems that the Holland line is cutting back on extras. We had a ocean view room and it was small compared to other Holland America ships. Couldn't ask for nicer staff. They couldn't do enough for you. If you see Markus on the Lido line handing out trays, say Hi from us. He is a sweetheart and will remember your name each time you come to eat. All in all, a nice trip. I would say to take something for sea sickness even if you have traveled many times. Most of us were not in the best of shape the first three days. That was the first for us and many more. Heard they were trying to make time and did not use their stablizers. Go and have fun but try to get your tickets at the last minute, much cheaper. Happy Travels Judy R from Florida

This was our first cruise,... by MaosdisM

This was our first cruise, taken for seven days on 8/25/02 - 9/1/02. I was sure glad that we didn't arrive early, because the ship didn't leave until 6:00p.m. (it was supposed to sail at 5:00pm). My first impression of the room was the colors were very gloomy with a brownish color bedding that looked very old, everyone knows pastels are the "in" color for big establishments. The window seal of the oceanview window had mold and the paint was pilling, which made you not want to sit and view the ocean. Over all the rest of the ship was very elegant. The food from the Lido deck was ok for casual eating. The main dining of the Rotterdam was very elegant, but the choices of food wasn't that great. Several nights I ordered steak, what a big mistake. The entertainment was ok, but there was not that much to do. If you drink pop or other beverages, beside water and tea, bring your own, because pop costs $1.75-$2.95 for a 12-oz. can. All of the islands are beautiful, but the stay in the Bahamas was too short from (8:00am-12:30pm). If you aren't a smoker you will be overwhelmed by the smoke on the pool decks. The crew member are all very pleasant. Cathy H.
