Interesting Adventure by Onthegoagain

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Asia & Indian Ocean

I didn't enjoy Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns as much as the west side cities of Darwin, Fremantle-Perth, Albany and down to Tasmania. Tasmania is excellent and the best ever!

Not enough shipboard activities by Tishypoo

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Panama Canal, Central America

I like the size of the ship and that it was not very crowded. The recent Hurricane might have played a part in that. Too many sea days and not enough to do. The ship board activities did not very much from day to day.

Canada Cruise by carolc926

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

I travelled with a group of 14 friends. If I had been on my own, I think I would have had a hard time filling the days with activities. The food was good, and the crew was excellent. My main complaint concerned the condition of the ship - very worn.

Perplexed by stewill9

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

I guess this is where I explain the title "PERPLEXED". I don't know whether or Holland America is to blame. But, why do you show a line titled "Cruise St Lawrence River" after Quebec City in the photo above? It looked like to me like we had the full day of cruising the St Lawrence, just like we had a full day of cruising the "Gulf of St Lawrence" 2 days earlier!!!!! SO, I thought we would arrive in Montreal on Sunday morning, not Saturday morning. It cost me over $500 for hotel (booked the last day of cruising at VERY high cost) plus extra charges to change our flight arrangements. You do list the numbers on the left of the photo above so that it says day 7 on both lines, but why do you have to have the second line 7 of "Gulf of St Lawrence" to confuse me???? NO REASON!!!! Or, you would have included a line for each of the other stops possible saying, "Cruise Coast of Nova Scotia!!!! It's an ERROR, for sure. Someone owes me compensation for $500, either or Holland America, whomever is responsible for this OBVIOUS error!! Or please explain to me how "Crystal Clear" this is. Again, WHY is that line even there??????

Just back from 7 day New England/Canada. Fourth time on Maasdam. Fabulous ship! Fabulous trip! She is getting old, launched in 1993, but never know it after the experience. Don't miss Fortress of Louisburg in Sydney, NB.

Summer Cruise on the Maasdam by WCF

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

All in all, one of the best ships, crew and overall experience I've had. A bit more TLC on the ship, and it would be perfect. I will sail Holland America again.

Very well done Hal. Although... by Rohnski

Sail date: /
Ship: Maasdam

Very well done Hal. Although there were a few hiccups on the cruise due to weather issues, the crew handled it very well. It's a ship that's not to big, not to small and that makes it feel very homely. Entertainment was spectacular and so was the food. For the reasons above I'm giving it a 5/5.

Subpar Cruise Experience by victoriamahal

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Had very high expectations given the reputation that I was informed HAL had. Unfortunately was disappointed. The boat was older and much smaller than others I have been on which may be why the grandiose of the trip was lost but in general we made the most of it and still had a good time. Definitely beautiful scenery to be seen and history to take in at the different ports.

Disappointing by kssparky

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

As mentioned earlier, this cruise was disappointing. Holland America has changed considerably and I would rank it equal to Royal Caribbean and a step above Carnival. It is not a luxury cruise. People not dressing for gala nights, dining room food just ok. No traditional presentations of food (baked alaska), no dutch hat nights and it was hard to get to know the crew (other than the cabin steward).

The overall experience of the... by richdbb53

Sail date: /
Ship: Maasdam

The overall experience of the ship was great. Although an older ship we always returned to a very clean room and the employees extremely friendly. We cruised from Montreal to Boston. All of the ports were fabulous. The helicopter ride over Quebec city was absolutely amazing and would highly recommend anyone who would like to see the ship and the historic area from a different angle. The food was very good. Better than some crew ships and maybe not up to par as others. Again always being served with a friendly smile. The down side was the onboard activities were minimal and unlike many other cruises I have been on the cruise director was rarely seen. The onboard entertainment was average at best. We attempted to go dancing with a quartet but their music set arrangements failedmiserably to keep people on the dance floor. The one major disgruntlement was on the tenders to Bar Harbor waiting for people to get on the transfer the diesel fuel in a cabin was horrible. Somepeople had to cover their faces and people had to hang their heads out the window. An accident waiting to happen. Grading Food B Ship B- Friendliness A Onboard activities D Cleanliness B Entertainment C - Ports A+ Disembarked A+

First Class by ScottWynn

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Food great. Service great. Entertainment great. People on board were of a higher class than my Carnival cruise. Did our own excursions. The Spa tries to upsell you. On the spa website it had a 55 minute massage, but on the sheet they give you onboard, they only show you higher price massages. This is deceptive. Spa is the only negative.

Good Canada cruise by bhineman

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

Good cruise, not sure i would do again though. We were really disappointed in the ship musicians overall. We are musicians so having to avoid bad performers i the bars was annoying.

Canada New England Cruise by drumtra

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Favorite parts of the cruise - We thoroughly enjoyed the ports except for Sydney. The service on the ship was excellent.

Only disappointment was was that the cruise was a little light on entertainment and things to do.

Great Ports of Call, Ship - So So by mdandcrnevin

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Maasdam / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Actually a 3 1/2. My favorite cities on the trip were Toronto and Quebec, which we saw by our Globus tour and then Quebec again, all of the Maritime Ports, and Bar Harbor on the Maasdam. All these towns had good restaurants, good pubs and many points of interest. The Canadians we met were all friendly and super helpful. The Maasdam is showing her age. There were repairs and maintenance going on underway that were likely due to her age. The immigration and then tendering in Bar Harbor was poorly organized and communicated. The food on board was good but not great. The service, especially for our cabin was excellent. The cabin was on the small side and dirty windows on the outside impaired our view. The ship does have self-serve laundry facilities, which is convenient considering we did a week's tour before the cruise.
